The SE has flat sides because they recycled an old chassis with next to no industrial design changes. If it got such a massive re-engineering, surely the entire chassis would get modernized…?

Well you have to admit, the advent of a new file system is a very irregular phenomenon and would have been extremely hard for OWC to prepare for.

I've been using OWC products to upgrade old Macbook Airs for years, and they have always exceeded hopes and expectations. If the choice is between ~$200 to upgrade a max-ed out Air SSD, or $1200 for a new and frankly unwanted Macbook, I think the former is still a solid choice for many users, APFS or not.

Apple released support for multiple users in educational environments with iOS 9.3. It's bound to trickle down to consumer installations sooner or later.

I don’t think you’re diagnosing the problem correctly, and that’s certainly not common at all. 

Most routers seem to have very inadequate cooling; is it possible that your router is in a sunny window, and overheating at a particular time of day?

my second guess would be a memory leak in the firmware... but that feels like a stretch. It would account for the slow accumulation of slowdown, but not on a 24 hour schedule. 

One other thought, are you doing a scheduled offsite backup? If it’s an older router with poor cooling, sustained heavy transfer of data at the same time of day would explain things.

IMO: if I'm not on the clock, I get to do whatever the hell I want. If I'm doing what my employer wants… apparently I'm back on the clock. I don't see how this is even controversial. ditto for the example of lawyers taking calls. 

And if these checks can really take as long as 25 minutes, that's 5% of your pay if you're on an 8 hour shift, 10% if you're part-time. Those are big numbers when you're on a retail salary.
