Apple execs explain Apple's position in the AI race & how it isn't necessarily 'behind'
Personally I like Apple’s take on AI. it’s isn’t trying to spoon feed me what IT WANTS. it’s a tool I0 control and choose what I want to do.Everyone else’s ai tries to almost remove the user from their work. That’s wack. I don’t want some unimind consensus machine forcing its whims. I want to direct and control. And even not use ai at all most of the time. I didn’t invest time into learning skills just to turn off my brain and hit cruise control - then just settle for whatever the system threw up on me.A lot of ai is useful and it seems that’s what apple is focusing on.Even so, they actually ARE a bit behind in execution quality. Some of the photo fixing is kind of embarrassing compared to the competition for example. But I expect this will be resolved shortly. The point is Apple is not behind in ai itself and is actually AHEAD when it comes to an ethical way of going about it. And on-device is definitely the way to go. -
iOS 26 vs iOS 18: Is Apple's 'Liquid Glass' a true redesign?
ramanpfaff said:I'll take iOS 6 over the rest. Sort of like OSX, 10.6 was the best. Both have been heading downhill ever since. I really don't see how this is considered a redesign, it's just lipstick on a pig as they say. -

Also the keyboards were a hardware team failure. The thin laptop wasn’t too much. But Intel failed their roadmap and so the chassis was not the best fit. It’s was a perfect storm. And Its not like pushing the envelope is a bad thing. That’s what jobs was all about. But at the particular moment in time, all of Apple did not act as one smooth operation. It was a company wide issue. To pretend that one product destroys a legend’s legacy when it wasn’t entirely on him to begin with is just stupidity. Look at the iMac. The iPod. The iPhone. The watch. The iPad. iOS 7 (the definition of restraint while reinventing the entire UI - which was being labeled “outdated” by pretty much everyone - until Ive saved the day yet again - and ignited a global design shift) and up. The MacBook pros he designed set the standard for all laptops - since the aluminum PowerBooks. The new ones still very similar to that. Ive was incredible with his restraint. The guy mastered revolution combined with restraint and in so doing, hit home run after grand slam, etc. absolute savage. Henke and Dye have been wise to emulate Jonny’s style and iterate upon it. It’s a perfect foundation. The man deserves his props and then some. That doesn’t go away because Apple as a company couldn’t get it together at one time in history. Apple would be better off if they had Ive today. But alas, he did well to train up an amazing team who could take up the reigns and thrive in their own right. -
Apple's new and sweeping user interface design is called 'Liquid Glass'

With iOS 7, the heavy transparency was awful because everything blended over itself and over the next few iOS updates, the transparency was significantly reduced so you could actually see what you were doing without elements from behind bleeding into everything else. I imagine the same will occur again. The screenshot above showing the Home Screen looks just like iOS 18, with a few minor tweaks to the icons. Not that much of a change. Not exactly a 'radical' design change as all the websites claimed. But to dismiss honest critique as “negative” is disingenuine. It’s obviously an updated, more advanced “Aqua” style. In fact they should have just called it that and it would be appreciated more. But like Aqua at the beginning, this look has usability drawbacks that will be addressed in updates. There are some contrast and readability issues in some areas so far. Easily fixable.I get they wanted consistency and they nailed that part. This is the most consistent up effort in history. But all the sameness may get old quickly. There are some areas where a more toned down vision is frosted glass treatment would be better. But that wouldn’t be consistent. So I expect stronger overlays, more pronounced blur, and button opa3yctity changes.Overrall it’s pretty cool. Should have just called it Aqua which was basically. An early rendition of liquid glass.
