  • Japan plans to fine Apple over app stores and force sideloading

The EU disease is infecting the planet.

When Sony is forced to allow Apple and nintendo and microsoft to have their App Stores on PlayStation and tv sets, then we can talk.

    Such nonsense.

  • Despite what you may have heard, don't write off the iMac just yet

    Great article Peter.

The iMac seems to be in the place the Mac mini was 5 years ago - nearly forgotten and neglected.

The baby iMac got a polarizing redesign in 2021 that improved in some ways (slim, new design ethos, better screen for the baby iMac) and went backward in others (nasty white bezels, clunky power brick that unceremoniously plops on the floor).

The big iMac has been the quintessential Mac for a while. It’s what you see in product placement on tv shows and movies and makes a powerful, modern, elegant statement, dressing up any environment it’s in.

When Apple paused it, many including myself were bummed, waiting to spend Mac money until it was relaunched. Some of those folks had gone ahead and went with the decidedly more PC-like combination of studio display and Mac mini/Studio while others still wait.

There’s just nothing like a big iMac. Especially when you can have this great, minimal setup with exactly one cable, plugging cleanly into a nearby outlet. Of the Mac’s I’ve had, the iMac 5k is my favorite. Was the centerpiece of my office and had everyone talking every time they saw it.

While the new Mac Studio and studio display are very attractive, they lack that extra special sauce the iMac had.

Of course apple has to see their new thing through, which means polarizing baby iMac and Mac Studio/min plus display setup for a bit. But I get the feeling that’s getting played out and a big, glorious new iMac is on the way.

  • Senator Warren wades into Apple's Beeper fight with irrelevant antitrust rhetoric

    Wait… Elizabeth Warren?

So we automatically know it’s either:

    1) a lie.

    Or

    2) nonsense.

In this case, it’s actually both. Good job, Liz.

  • Apple's vice president of product design leaving in February

It’s difficult to know how to feel about something like this when we know so little about the person, their actual contributions, or the reason for the departure.

For some, it’s a big hit. Some of the Apple Silicon team were geniuses and when they left, it took some serious steam out of M2 and took a while for Apple to regain that lost momentum.

For others, the impact is lightly felt if at all.

Sometimes, someone’s best work is behind them. They may have contributed tremendously in the past, but have just run out of juice. Sometimes a change of pace and place allows them to recharge and get the mojo back. Other times not so much.

One person can make or break even a ginormous corporation while another person’s presence or absence is barely felt. It can be difficult to get a bead on, regardless of position or title. Interestingly, the designs of iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods have all been somewhat static and lacking in meaningful progression.

I think the industry as a whole is at such a place now where the truly skilled and visionary engineers and designers are fairly interchangeable amongst the tech companies and the basics of financial compensation, alignment of values, and workplace enjoyment factor very highly.

While Apple likely does very well in all three of those, some things can grate. The super open collaboration can stifle those who take longer to fully vet and process their thoughts, while other, Norse socially inclined folks feel their needs are met. No doubt this is a boon for those who have less complex ideas to share, while those with more grandiose vision need more time to distill it in a digestible way for others to fully grasp.

If he wasn’t the boss, I don’t think even Jobs would fit in at today’s Apple - though that would be a massive loss.

Time will tell how this one goes. Wish him well.

  • If you're using a Magic Keyboard, you've opened up an attack vector

It’s been a question mark for some time. I can see a proprietary, Apple-secured wireless connection chip being developed and added to Applle’s SOCs. And why not? They’re in a unique position to do so.

Bluetooth can still be available for third party fare, but it’s another reason to buy Apple accessories if they add their own Bluetoothesque feature.
