U.S. antitrust officials ask to be heard in Epic vs. Apple appeal
tht said:It’s going to be interesting what the government is going to say. Their only real recourse is “steering” the interpretation of US antitrust law towards EU competition laws. The EU laws are sufficiently vague enough such that they can make a minority player run afoul of competition laws.If it is just you plain USA antitrust, they’ve got nothing. Not only that, the market opportunities for developers has only increased since the lawsuit started. If the trial was today, it should be laughed out of court as Epic has multiple ways to get in front of iOS users now, and it has more mobile platforms that is available to them.Kind of seems like we are getting a peak behind the door of what Epics out-of-nowhere lawsuit is really about and who is involved. Sweeney is a goofy dudebro. Not the brightest guy and not a maverick. For him to go there was strange. And now we have to wonder if this doesn’t originate in deeper unexpected places. -
With iRobot acquisition, Amazon wants to scan every inch of your home
Posted this yesterday.Amazon will be mapping your home interior.Scary stuff. They are already listening to every word you speak, the entertainment you watch and listen to, and have your buying habits down. It’s bad enough that one company has this snd has already proven an untrustworthy gatekeeper.Even worse that they are a DOJ darling - who protects them from Apple and others getting the upper hand in free markets such as ebooks. That’s why I don’t have any Amazon hardware in my home or office. I do rely on Prime however, and that’s unfortunate. Speaking of antitrust, where is the antitrust scrutiny of Amazon, which dominates online retail, bullying partners into losing money, operates music and video streaming tied into a shipping service, and has bought their way into many markets - I don’t see Amazon offering a direct payment redirect button to pay cheaper at the reseller companies online stores. I don’t see their destructive-to-the-author ebook pricing scheme, nor their draconian resell partner policies. Not the fact that they sell knockoffs labeled as the genuine item. It’s crazy. On its face, Amazon offers valuable services thst anyone can appreciate. The problem is that said services are also Trojan horses thst you gladly bring into the most vulnerable places in your life, unaware of the nefarious dangers that Amazon puts to use against you and for them.Really shameful thst such practices aren’t outright illegal as l in the United States.Hiding such terms in lengthy license agreements should be illegal - as should the requidd add ire requirement of throwing away the option your day in court in order to use something you paid for. -
The cheesegrater Mac Pro could still be the best Mac ever made
avon b7 said:For me, the Sawtooth line was the best desktop Mac ever released.
Rock solid, excellent accessibility and an internal firewire port which, sadly, Apple never bothered to take anywhere.
And designwise, beautiful for its time. The OG Mac Pro was and is also iconic. Even today, it doesn’t look a bit outdated. Performance was insane too. I bought one for my organization shortly after it was available. We were running notoriously unoptimized software that was barely chugging along on all of our systems, and the Mac Pro ran it like a hot knife through butter. A legend of its time. -

Netflix now features an external subscription button on iOS
Ridiculous. Apple needs to charge a fair fee for that link in order to cover the costs of platform usage and access to Apple customers, App Store and data center maintenance, marketing, and associated utilities. As someone previously stated, Apple didn’t make the sacrifices to offer a free ride.Apple’s cut pays for the manpower and resources that enable the various platforms to be the successes they are. That money doesn’t grow on trees. As a rule, I never mess with apps that destroy my seamless experience by forcing their shenanigans and try to make me jump through hoops to use their services when I previously had such an easy time handling everything through one easy, integrated, nice to use system. The last app was a reader app. It was easy to make purchases and worked perfectly. Then one day, they decided to destroy my experience, force me out of that convenience, and shove me to their website which lost my paid for archives, and didn’t work well for new items.Never again. If you don’t use apples system, I don’t use your app. It’s like the late 90s is back to turn the internet into the Wild West again.
