  • USB 3.0 & USB 3.1 merger into USB 3.2 branding by overseers further confusing USB-C

What the heck are they thinking? What's wrong with 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3? It clearly indicates incremental advancement and implies improved performance. I've seen very few device manufacturers provide any significant detail regarding connector specifications even in their "manuals", let alone their marketing materials or packaging. They're certainly not going to squeeze this ludicrous naming schema onto the side of a device. FWIW, most users could care less about the connection speed, they're just going to be frustrated when their device doesn't work because their port is not compatible with it despite having what appears to be the exact same connection. And I say that as the guy who actually reads the specs, manuals, tech data, and documentation (when it exists).

  • Compared: Samsung's Galaxy S10 range vs. Apple's iPhone XS and iPhone XR

The hole-punch doesn't actually seem to give you more "useable" screen area. You can't do anything useful with the pixels above and to the right of the camera. I would also think that it has its own unique issues, especially regarding fragility and repairability. The integrity of that corner would be compromised by the camera hole, and would be more prone to breaking not only from drops, but also during repairs when swapping the display after a drop. I would also think that it must be a pain to address those pixels from the controller, too. My $0.02, as ever.

  • The AMD Radeon VII doesn't work on the Mac at launch, but will soon

It would be fantastic if someone would make a Mac Pro 2013 compatible video card upgrade. Actually surprised we haven't seen one yet. I realize that it's a different form factor, but if Apple could make dual D700 cards work, why not Vega?

  • Apple highlights iPad Pro's productivity prowess in new ad series

I really like my iPad Pro, but there are a lot of arbitrary restrictions that prevent it from being as useful for "real work" as it could be. It's a great note taking device, no doubt. But, if they can port iOS Apps to macOS for use with a mouse/trackpad, then they can certainly bring mouse/trackpad support over to iOS. In a related but different topic, it's very odd that keyboards aren't default enabled to control games. Also, there is clearly enough GPU horsepower and the OS capability to drive an external monitor, but it's done in such a clunky way right now. They really need to put a lot more effort in to making the iPads true laptop replacements if they want to keep pushing them as such. It's really frustrating that my ~$1,000 iPad setup can't do some really basic things that a ~$200 Chromebook can.

  • Tested: Will the new i7 Mac mini run faster with new thermal paste?

It would be really cool if someone found a way to retrofit the Mac Mini components into a Mac Pro (aka trash can) enclosure. The thermal capacity should be dramatically better. It would be really interesting to see how an Intel Core i7 or i9 performed in that environment. Even better if someone found a way to include an AMD RX580 or Vega56.
