How Apple's Aperture created a new class of app on October 19, 2005 and lost it to Adobe L...
I really liked Aperture and was sad to see it go. One feature that I still miss is the RAW+JPG workflow. Aperture allowed me to import just the JPG versions so I could quickly sort/review/delete, then only pull and sync the RAW files from the same card/disk that I wanted. It was a fantastic workflow that I've yet to see anyone replicate. I've been hoping that it would be brought into Apple Photos, but so far it hasn't. It would certainly be a tremendous boon for working on the iPad where you have to import everything just to review shots. I have pretty good eyes, and there's no way even I can do a decent review from the swath of 1" thumbnails that are presented to import. My $0.02, of course. -
Google is downplaying Android to focus its future on Chrome OS
I'm actually surprised Samsung or LG hasn't figured out a way for Tizen or webOS to run apps written in Swift. If they built a compiler and made the right API/GUI changes, they could essentially offer developers an alternate platform for existing iOS apps with a relatively easy port process. Apple has already open sourced Swift, so the IP should be clear. That should give them a huge leg up on Android devices by switching to native code rather than VM. My $0.02, as ever. -
Microsoft axes Minecraft for Apple TV, no one notices
I agree that Apple has definitely lost many opportunities for games on the AppleTV, but MS also contributed to the low uptake on this game. They charged an additional $20 for this title, even if you had already purchased Minecraft for your other iOS devices. That was a completely ridiculous ask for this. My kids play Minecraft on several devices, including iPad/iPhone and Xbox, but I wasn't going to pay for yet another license just to have it on the AppleTV. There was simply no rationale to justify the cost. I have 2 Steel series controllers which are fantastic, and multiple AppleTV games, but I play them less and less. It's clear that devs aren't updating or releasing titles for the platform. It's a shame because there's lots of potential and the AppleTV runs the existing games quite well. -
Apple 'Gather round' 2018 iPhone event scheduled for September 12
That concentric ring graphic looks a lot like the electrical contacts used for connections that can rotate. put a magnet behind it, and it could be the new smart connector for an iPad Pro. The current smart connector has 3 pins and magnets to ensure connection, so that would match well with the graphic. The 3 pins are likely typical serial communication standard Tx/Rx & GND. Maybe we're going to see a new iPad Pro with a compatible keyboard module that would make it more like a convertible laptop. My $0.02, of course. -
Apple's Mac Pro 'cheese grater' is 19 years old, and is the best Mac ever made
I've owned and integrated Macs of all shapes and sizes for years. I own a "trashcan" Mac Pro now, and it's a fantastic machine. I use it constantly for professional work. I've never understood the vitriol that it received from some "pros". I remember the benefits and the hassles of dealing with the "cheese graters". They were incredibly powerful and vastly more stable than anything available with a Windows OS. They were also huge and difficult to fit in equipment racks or even under desks in "professional" workspaces. They were upgradeable, but the list of actual available upgrade parts was pretty short. It often took months or years for vendors that would provide Mac support on "off-the-shelf" parts to actually roll it out. It was a great machine, but it was not all wine and roses as some would seem to suggest. My $0.02, as usual.
