  • California Attorney General threatens lawsuit over potential 25% iPhone tariff

You still haven’t answered my question. Trump’s demand that Apple open a US iPhone factory in weeks or face a targeted 25% tariff is impossible. If you’re Tim Cook, what’s your response to an impossible demand?
    "See you in court." :)
Yeah, I want @9secondkox2 to answer the question. As a True Believer, constantly claiming Trump has a plan and playbook with the tariffs, he should be able to explain what this demand is supposed to elicit in response.  He previously claimed that Apple would be “fine,” and that the previous tariff exemptions were part of this master plan, and that Trump was looking out for Apple, because he and Cook have a good relationship.

Now we’re at what surely looks like an impasse.  What response could Apple possibly give to avoid a hugely damaging 25% tariff? I think the person claiming there’s a well-reasoned plan should be able to tell us what it is.

Little Bonta isn’t going to do anything. The president has the authority to impose tarriffs and exercise trade policy. Tarriffs ate a trade tool. And he’s using them to get things fairer for America.

Cook has Trumps number. Just needs to call and provide some assurances.

Bonta needs to watch Bambi vs Godzilla.

  • Apple's AI smart screen devices will have to wait on Siri revamp

This starts to perhaps support my argument that the home hub itself will be a screen-less, stationary box, like Apple TV, that will provide centralized computational power to enable AI on all home-networked devices, including HomePods, TVs and dedicated home control screens. The J490 screens described here would be comparatively inexpensive portable terminals, networked to the hub. Wall mounts (and other mount options) would give the screens a powered home base, with the idea that a home would have multiple screens distributed to key locations.

Having a truly Apple-like Apple Home where it all “just works” depends on reliable and convenient user control available throughout the home. HomePods offer distributed voice control, but convenient hands-on control has thus far included the common inconvenience of the user having left their iPhone or iPad elsewhere in the home. Wall-mounted terminal screens inexpensive enough to own a few resolve that problem.

  • Trump demands 25% tariff on any iPhone not made in the US

    Wow. Where’s the moderation now?
Where’s your answer to my very on-topic question? You claim Trump has a playbook here. If he does, given your insight into that, how would you respond to his tariff threat on Apple? You’re Tim Cook. Trump says all iPhones sold US must be made in the US by the end of June, or he’s going to slap a 25% tariff on imported iPhones. Ok. Got a response to that, or do you just bloviate about there being a playbook without any understanding of what it would be? Given that it's impossible to open a US iPhone factory in a year or two, no matter the capital expense, what is the response from Apple supposed to be when the demand is for a factory to open in a few weeks?

Come on apple! Get it moving!

In addition, the EU has got fire breathing on them in a major way.

This is all talk at the moment. As we have seen, Trump has a playbook. He will make a strong demand. If there is no effort or negotiation, he will  execute on that promise. Then, when stubborn parties have softened, he will negotiate again, or pivot as needed. This administration is very agile and can turn on a dime. And with Scott bessent factoring so heavily, it’s going to turn out well.

Trump got criticized for helping apple with exemptions and he will surely get criticized for this. Dude can’t win with some people.
And there it is, as I predicted.

Trump does not have a playbook. At least, not the one you’re suggesting.

It is literally impossible for Apple to meet Trump’s demand that Apple make iPhones in the United States. Even if they entirely disregarded the cost and economics, it would take years before the first phone rolled off the production line. So what’s in the playbook after (probably illegally) threatening a 25% tariff if Apple doesn’t make iPhones in the US?

This is the same President (illegally) accepting a Trojan horse of a “free” airplane, thinking that it can be retrofitted right away to be used as Air Force One. Then he wants to turn it over to his Presidential Library, where he promises not to use it. In reality, it will take years and an estimated $1 billion to retrofit the plane. If it even makes it into service before the end of 2028, he’s going to then decommission it and permanently park it at an as-yet unidentified library location? Why am I bringing that ridiculous scenario up? Because it makes as much sense as demanding Apple move iPhone production to the US or face a selective and probably illegal tariff.

So ok. Let’s say you’re put in charge of Apple. What’s your response to this impossible demand?
