Matter 1.4.1 will eventually make it easier to setup your smart home
I've been using a fair collection of Apple Home things for quite a while, and (at least since I eliminated everything Wemo) it all runs pretty reliably and steadily.
That is, except for the couple of times recently when I've tried introducing Matter devices. Then all of a sudden other things start randomly dropping out and getting glitchy. It could be coincidence, but at this point I'm hesitant to play with devices that only work via Matter. Also, I have definitely seen no reason to "upgrade" existing HomeKit devices to the Matter standard. It feels a bit like fixing something that isn't broken.
I imagine there will come a time when avoiding the Matter stuff will become more difficult, and I hope it's more reliable by that point. -
Apple's Eddy Cue is guessing that the iPhone will eventually be replaced by AI
This isn't Eddy Cue at WWDC announcing the end of the iPhone. It's not Cue anywhere announcing the end of the iPhone. It's Cue testifying in court, making the accurate observation that new, paradigm-shifting technologies emerge, and those shifting paradigms can mean that something currently ubiquitous will no longer be ubiquitous at some point in the future. This leads to a speculative example that AI technology could mean there's no new iPhone at some point in the future.
Kids graduating high school now were born before the iPhone existed. Kids who graduated high school when the iPhone was first released were born at time when AOL for DOS was just coming out, and CDs were the existential threat to vinyl records. So many of these things last just long enough for people to convince themselves that they've always been here and always will be. Next thing you know, ubiquity becomes old hat, and your custom-built entertainment center is completely mismatched with the now-ubiquitous technology that's perched awkwardly on top of the prior tech that's old enough to be obsolete, but not yet old enough to ironic retro. -
Future Magic Mouse could detect gestures in the air like Apple Vision Pro
As long as they keep the charging port on the bottom, I'm good with any possible upgrades. Or they could replace the port with inductive MagSafe charging, which naturally would be on the bottom. I wonder if people would still go nuts if you could just set it on an iPhone or watch MagSafe charger, as you can with an AirPods case? I mean, it would no longer be on its side or upside down, as with the current plug-in port, but it would still be insistently wireless. -
Slim iPhone will gain a larger screen in 2027, alongside iPhone fold 2
“It's now unusual for Kuo to be clear whether he is predicting or reporting supply chain information. While this has meant his accuracy has been harder to determine, he has long had a strong track record for Apple information.
That said, he has also previously predicted that the iPhone fold would be released in 2024.”
It’s still a complete mystery why Kuo continues to be lauded with superlatives like “a strong track record for Apple information.”
Even when his prognostications were supposedly based on supply chain intel, he would make predictions and then repeatedly update and change them and still be awarded with a “look, he was right!” if he happened to correct his “prediction” to something close to accurate within days or hours before Apple made a corresponding announcement. Now he’s issuing predictions based on who knows what, and even as it’s noted that “his accuracy is harder to determine,” and that he’s already failed on the current “iPhone fold” prediction, we’re still reminded of his “strong track record.”
So what is it? Do we think he must really mean it this time? -
