  • Andy Rubin's Essential announces first devices, including Apple HomeKit-ready assistant

The hardware of the phone is interesting - at least it gives an indicator of how the little wings left and right of the latest iDesign are working - they seem to be more in the flow than the big cutout of this camera. But, looking at the designs and demo is one thing - the question is how this will perform in real life. What I am missing is the outcry of "no headphone jack" and "Waterproof" etc. that the feature tickers like to go through. Can't wait to hear the aDroids shout innovation and all that stuff that  is 'missing' - for a device that will essentially sell way lower numbers than even the mac mini... At $699, why not just get an iPhone :)

Is a voice assistant device with a screen not just a Siri-up version of an iDevice?
my iPad Pro 9.7" is usually in my office when I am at home and my second iPad is in the living room (plugged in) - if I am in any room, I can just say: "Hey Siri" and each of the devices responds quickly enough.
Yes, sometimes it does not understand me correctly, and yes, sometimes I wish it would be more context aware and yes, I wish it could do other things that seemingly work nicer with the echo. The reason why I don't have an echo is that I am a) invested in the System and b) I don't like that you have to learn syntax for Alexa.

  • Apple drops to 5th place in LaptopMag's brand rankings after leading for multiple years

Apple should make all Macs with upgradable (not soldered) components like microprocessor and GPU, and mostly for RAM and SSD. Never using proprietary connectors but standard ones. Besides not charging 2 to 3 times more for the very same upgrade than resellers like Amazon (RAM, SSD, etc). That is really shocking for the richest company on planet Earth.
Or they could just do what they have been doing. Realistically, proprietary connectors and custom made solutions will always be more efficient on cost / space / hear etc. depending on what they want to optimize for. Same for soldered on - remember the good old time when your connectors got loose and you had to unscrew your devices just to plug in a cabe - that does not work with super thin, ultra portable laptops. Just the connectors are a waste of space. I would rather just buy a new device every 2 years, given that the resell value is rather high on 2 year old macs - the "upgrade" cost is not that high.
