  • Apple assessed Apple TV 'dongle' to goose adoption of new streaming service, report says

I have 2 ATV 4’s, 1 ATV 3, and a 2016 Roku Express. The ATV 4’s provide a much better experience. The apps are of higher quality, they are responsive, and never crash. The Roku Express isn’t horrible - it’s better than Android TV and Amazon Fire Stick, but it’s just not up to the same level, which is expected with the differences in cost. You get what you pay for.

tvOS does place local content on the back burner, but Apple has been phasing that out for a while now. The computers app is “old”, and in my opinion probably still has code in it from the Apple TV 1 and Front Row, which focuses on local content. If you have a lot of personally ripped media, your better off running Plex or Emby, it’s going to be a better experience.

  • MacBook Pro keyboard silicone eases but doesn't solve dust ingress issue

MacBook Pro party at the beach! Tomorrow after work, who's down?
While that was a funny comment, I think it's fair to say the scissor mechanism was more reliable. Several people had to go back three times because of dust in their keyboard? I never heard stories like these with the old keyboard. Also, don't recall Apple having a program to fix those old keyboards and three class action lawsuits about them. I figure keyboard redesigns should be more relabel, not less so. But look: thinner, and thinner!!
Sure, scissors mechanism are bullet-proof.  Who the hell needs anything other than that?
The scissors mechanism wasn’t bulletproof by any means. Take it from someone (me!) who managed the team that made the repairs at a higher ed institution. We had a lot of keyboard replacements - some due to abuse, some due to wear and tear.

So Windows 7, which was first released in 2009 and lost mainstream support in 2015, still gets extended support from Microsoft and Apple iTunes. Hmmm…
If Apple is still willing to support iTunes on Win7 I would assume that it's because there's still a substantial number of iTunes users on that platform. I have no numbers but I'd assume that Win7 with iTunes installed would outnumber all versions of macOS in use today.
And most Win7 users do not have the security expectations that most Apple device users demand
In my experience and from my vantage point very few users are really concerned about security, but do you think that's the reason Apple is supporting Win7 over there simply being a lot of Win7 users out there?
I would imagine Apple still supports iTunes on Windows 7 because its an officially supported operating system by Microsoft that's still updated monthly, sometimes weekly, and there are still a large number of Windows users who have iOS devices, iTunes Music Library's, or Apple Music subscriptions.  XP and Vista are out of support by both Microsoft and Apple.

  • Hands on with Dark Mode in MacOS Mojave

    1) I’ve looked for, but haven’t been able to locate, the PLIST so I could use the “defaults write com.apple.[plist_name] [setting_name] [type 1]” command in Terminal so I can create a script that will change the appearance at certain times of day or when the ambient light sensor registers a certain value. Any info on this would be much appreciated.

    2) I've noticed that some websites will change their background when you switch to Dark Mode. They aren't changing the text on screen, which makes it hard to read. It makes me think working more like Smart Invert on iOS.
Have you tried sorting your preferences folder by date/time and see which .plists rise to the top when you toggle the feature on and off? Or you could run a tool like fsmonitor tonsee what files are being touched when you enable dark mode.

I’m hoping that I can turn this feature on with a configuration profile - this will be great for our multimedia teaching labs.  The Adobe apps and Final Cut already have dark themes.

Damn, my Mini 2011 won’t make the cut...:(. I can’t believe I’ve used a this Mac Mini for 7 years and it still works great!
Not just Mini 2011. The best MacBook Pro I’ve used is MBP Early 2011.
Apple should continue releasing security patches of macOS High Sierra, or the last upgrade versions for older intel-based Macs.
ElCap is still getting security updates, and even Yosemite as far as I know, so you'll have a few years of support on Sierra and High Sierra left yet.
Yosemite is no longer receiving updates, since High Sierra was released.  El Capitan will stop receiving updates when Mojave is released, unless Apple changes the support policy that has been in place for the last decade or so...
