I love it when people say crap like this without providing any further context, especially about the much better design they obviously have in their heads

I don't think they are saying it's a deal breaker. But this is a MacBook, not a ThinkPad. The last redesign (2016) moved the design forward, this seems to move it backwards. It wouldn't stop me buying the machine but it's a fair observation.

I find the concept that if it's not upgradeable it's not Pro a bit bizarre. Pro doesn't just mean IT person. There are lots of other industries like Media, Science, Finance etc where people need lots of power but aren't going to open the machine themselves to upgrade the internals. 

I've built my own computers many times but do it a lot less now because most of my "computers" are devices like iPads and games consoles.

im not saying it shouldn't be upgradeable, just that it not being upgradeable doesn't make it non-pro. 

It always makes me laugh when they send out that Christmas email every year, suggesting I buy my loved ones $500 worth of iPad or even $1k worth of laptop. 

I'm lucky enough to earn decent money but even so, it's not how Christmas goes down in our house. An Apple Watch leather strap is more like the right price range.
