How to free up space on your iPhone without deleting photos or apps
Another simple trick is to ensure iTunes songs are not 'downloaded' to your device, but rather remain on the iTunes cloud. In IOS 10, simply go to your Music/Albums then click on a specific Album. If the word DOWNLOADED appears highlighted, just click on it and then select Remove Downloads. Be careful NOT to select Delete from Library!You can first go to General/Storage & iCloud Usage/Manage Storage, then click on Music. This will allow you to see which songs are the memory hogs, that you can then select using the above process.
