2021 Apple TV 4K versus 2017 Apple TV 4K - Who should buy the new model, and who should no...
The biggest two features for me personally were the addition of WiFi 6 and Thread. The rest is kind of “blah”.
I will be getting two when they come out as I’ve been holding off for the last 8 months. I will be upgrading my HD and 3rd Gen versions. One will go to the main house and the other to the second home so I have a Thread enabled HomeKit capability in both.
The HDs will be moved to replace the 3rd Gens and the 3rd Gens will be sold - even now they still fetch over $50 on resale (provided you have the box). Absolute bargain considering how long I’ve used them! -
Apple burns early iPad Pro adopters, loyal customers with Magic Keyboard incompatibility
davgreg said:Rayz2016 said: Apple knows that no one who bought the last generation iPad Pro is going to be looking to buy another one just yet.
I will be upgrading from the current to the new, but will be going from 256 GB and WiFi to 1TB and 5G. I think at this point I will be getting out of the laptop space (MacBooks of any type) and just using desktop Macs and an iPad Pro.
If I could perform development work just on the iPad (call it a Pro) then I would definitely shift away from needing any laptop and move to a desktop + iPad Pro setup like yourself. Here’s to hoping for some pretty significant iPadOS updates at WWDC.
So silly little accessory issues like this do grab the attention as it will impact investment decisions. -
M1 chip and Thunderbolt come to Apple's 11-inch iPad Pro
Im looking forward to Wesley Hilliard's view on this announcement (and hopefully a future review) as he’s known to use an iPad Pro as his main machine and was potentially in the market for a new one if I recall from the last podcast.
it does make you wonder what will be announced at WWDC in terms of pushing iPadOS forward as I’m pretty sure that’s the main constraint for the iPad Pro, especially now. -
FCC filing reveals HomeKit-enabled Eve Weather with Thread support
The current Eve Degree already monitors temperature, humidity, and air pressure and saves these measurements 144 times per day and can be placed outside. I have several located around my property (outside and inside) for monitoring. Thread would be a nice addition, though as an end-point device it is of fairly limited benefit today, but good for future proofing.
A few improvements I would like to see are:- Rechargeable battery (similar to the Eve Room 2) so we can eliminate the use of single use button batteries;
- Like 1 above, provide the option to have it permanently powered so that full thread support could be enabled (when powered); and
- A way to automatically export the measurements from the Eve devices - I collate a whole heap of information and history for measuring my home energy use and environment - now the Eve Home App is on M1 Mac's this should be a fairly simple enhancement to add into the App.
- Air pollution level sensor, similar to the Air Quality on the Eve Room, but for use outside;
- Pollen level sensor; and
- Noise / dB sensor.

Apple TV+ ranks low in streaming industry surveys despite market boom
GeorgeBMac said:Apple, since the very beginning has argued against cable TV's penchant for flooding the consumer with a huge pile of junk and, instead, argued for choice -- particularly around selected, high quality material.And, of course, they were correct.But, at the same time, current TV+ offering are so limited that they, by themselves cannot satisfy the typical consumer. So they serve as a supplement to other subscription services. And, that's ok: at $5 a month I'm willing to take what I get and wait while Apple develops and rolls out more and more shows.Meanwhile, it ties in well with the physical Apple TV -- where yesterday I went from Apple Music videos to Apple Fitness+ to streaming a Mohamed Ali fight fight on FaceBook to Amazon Prime TV. While I did not not watch any strictly Apple TV+ shows yesterday, that is really only because I'm in the middle of a series from Amazon Prime. I have watched them and will be watching more in the future.- Netflix is starting to get expensive now, but it still has a few good shows and movies on that we are working our way through, but the newer stuff is clearly quantity over quality. Once we're through what we have on our watch list(s) we will probably cancel it... again.
- Amazon Prime wise we only really like 4 or 5 of the shows on it. If it wasn't for the fact we order off Amazon regularly I'm not sure we would pay anything for it so it being bundled means we will keep it until they change the way it's priced.
- Disney+ has been brilliant value for us as the back catalogue alone has kept my kid entertained during the lockdowns. It's also been great to sit and watch all the old movies we grew up with again but with our child. The biggest issue we've had with Disney+ is the limited country coverage it has. This really annoyed us when we were able to travel overseas to see family in the summer but were unable to play anything, even the downloaded content!
