Facebook 'unintentionally' harvested email contacts from 1.5M users
Winding down a feature or a project usually involves some planning. Depending on the type of shutdown, there’s hardware, API references, virtual machines, encryption keys, SSL certs, server side scripts, database connections, etc.
So to be clear, Facebook dumps resources into new privacy destroying features but can’t be bothered with appropriate asset retirement.
I work in cyber security and Facebook’s platform cannot be secure with legacy assets in play. I would expect a serious hacking incident soon, as their attack surface is not properly managed. The very best cyber security software cannot protect against ignorance and poor implementation.
This might sound like common sense; do not but private things on Facebook, do not connect any financials, do not use the Sign in with Facebook option, and do not underestimate Facebook’s deplorable track record. -
Apple's smart glasses can change the game in a niche augmented & virtual reality market
For the foreseeable future, hand tracking on mobile AR will be limited within the view. There is simply not enough battery and processor bandwidth to include additional cameras for hand tracking.
Any hand tracking in the view can register virtual buttons and keyboards, maybe use the haptic feedback in the AW to provide a tactile response. Future of this tech could be a band on each wrist that detects hand motion and uses low intensity electrical stimulus for virtual touch. -
Review: Philips Hue Outdoor Sensor is the first outdoor motion detector for HomeKit

My gripe is base stations, while recently visiting a friend’s home, i noticed a floor of hubs and power cords - ugly to me. This is how the smart thermostats started and the reason why i bought into ecobee long before anyone heard of them outside of canada. they found a way to make an amazing smart thermostat without the use of a Hub while others had ugly antennna hubs, they weren’t for me.
Looking forward to the future when these items can be charged by solar, no wires and no hubs.
Unfortunately Apple ceded the network gear market at a time that’s ripe for innovation. I’m hoping that they will jump back in with the advent of mesh, IoT, high bandwidth, services, and security.
Dear Tim Cook,
If AirPods generate enough revenue to be a viable market, how is this not similar? Services could include cyber security monitoring, VPN solutions, and home AI for security (ex: pool guy is not a burglar, or the maid didn’t steal anything). Allow the AI to coordinate with your neighbors AI in case a fire or burglary in progress. Monitor your handicapped child or parents remotely, without being invasive.
Hardware would be $150 nodes for a high speed, high bandwidth network with on demand mesh fragmenting and private AI/HomeKit channels (Call the tech lightning bolt? Lol). -
Samsung's 'Infinity Flex Display' demo shows future of foldable smartphones
franklinjackcon said:I could be wrong but looking at the perspective, it seems a lot of content would end up with black bars along the top and bottom so you end up with the opposite problem that most tall phones have these days. Regardless, whoever can execute this well, will have a very interesting device. It seems like this would be the most logical future form factor if the price/performance/thickness is right.
This technology might never gain mass market appeal or be over quickly, due to augmented reality becoming ubiquitous. I would rather put on a pair of glasses and have a screen of any size, on any surface, without the limitations of a physical screen. Not to mention the numerous other features that AR allows.
Last but not least, I applaud Samsung for developing a new material for the “cover window”. That being said, considering my background in advanced engineered materials, glass cannot currently bend enough for this concept, not even close. That leaves a specialty plastic with a vapor deposited abrasion resistant coating. Translated, this will not have a very long service life (max # of bends) nor will it be very durable. There’s a reason the prototype was unveiled in the dark, and if you believe Samsung’s “design protection statement”, PM me because I have some great real estate to sell you.
