  • Video shootout: Apple's iPhone XS Max versus Google's Pixel 3 XL

    Great comparison, thanks.

I have only been shooting stills but your pair of reviews (video/still) has shown the Xs struggling in some low light scenarios (with flash in the case of stills). I have seen this too on what is otherwise a game-changing camera system. I am suspending judgement until iOS 12.1 because it seems like there may be a bug in there: the camera hardware feels as though it should be able to do better. Here's hoping!
Remember...in SETTINGS --> CAMERA --> Record Video --> click ON AUTO LOW LIGHT FPS.

For me, i have set video to 4k30 (to take advantage of Smart HDR) with AUTO LOW LIGHT FPS (ON).

For video, there is nothing that come close to Smart HDR 4K 30 on the Xs.  Xs took it to another level this year.

This article and the comments that follow remind me of a hillarious SNL skit "The Champ" with Jonah Hill.  The iPhone xs being Jonah Hill when he exits the car with all the well wishing friends (this article and commenters) telling him he is the best, that he saved the day, the man!   But then of course Jonah Hill's character goes inside where the local news is telling a feel good story about the other team throwing the match, about all the high school kids playing along to give the town loser a great day, making him feel like a winner if for only just a little while.

So, this is literally the only review I've seen that gives apple the win over the pixel 3.  Of course the entire rest of the internet are paid shills for Google.  The iPhone and the Pixel 3 are two very different takes on smartphone experience.  One being better at some things doesn't make the other a loser that is not worthy of purchase.  It just means some people value different things.  Not sure why so many iPhone owners are so threatened by Pixel phones.  The iPhones still do some things very well, or even better than the Pixel, just not the things I care about.  But that doesn't mean the iphone wasn't the right purchase for you.
Actually, if you look at media and Youtubers (see links above in my post), then it is not that great for Pixel.

For pictures, a toss up...some like Xs camera for the shadow details...some like Pixel 3 high contrast.  If you add in Night Sight, then yeah Pixel 3 may have edge......if Night Sight is used often enough.

For video, there is no question which is better...by a fairly wide margin.  Xs video capability is far better than P3 in basically every aspect.

So, yeah, i think that THIS year, iPhone overall camera capability has surpass Pixel 3.

I have a 4K smart TV that cost me about half what I paid for my first flat screen TV. Apple’s iPhone are more expensive because they can be. Apple knows most people aren’t buying the phone outright but paying over time. Adding $200 to the price of the phone doesn’t add that much to a monthly payment.
Oh man that’s so boneheaded. You must not work with technology... A TV is way less complicated than a minuturized computer. Most TVs are the same commodity panels and little more, while iphones have tons of tech and new layers and things every year.
So how is Apple able to sell a brand new iPad for $329? How were they able to sell new phones in the past without raising the price? How come the 2010 MacBook Air was better and cheaper than the 2008 model?
IPad $329 comes with some compromises...non-laminated display (less anti-reflection) and 2 years old processor.  And this is why iPad Pro is so much more expensive.
What compromises did the 2010 MacBook Air have over the 2008 model? If a new retina MacBook is announced next week do you think it should be more expensive than the current model? Because some here seem to be arguing that when Apple introduces a new product it should be more expensive than the product it’s replacing.
How do you explain iPhone Xs costing the same as iPhone X despite Xs being a pretty big improvement?
