Hands on: Default Folder X for macOS transforms how you use and retrieve documents
Regarding Default Folder X's UI, where the article says: "Previous versions of the app had this in black where now it's a white and somehow seems vastly more intrusive."
There's a setting in Default Folder X's prefs, in the "Open & Save" tab, to set the style of the bezel. You can choose from Light Bezel, Dark Bezel, and Minimal Toolbar to suit your tastes. Dark Bezel is the old black appearance, and Minimal Toolbar makes the whole UI as unintrusive as possible.
