The next article will take a closer look at how Apple was able to sneak past larger more entrenched silicon experts at Intel, Qualcomm, and Samsung while the media doubted its progress and bet that rivals would easily catch up.

Yup, I'm a lot more interested in how Apple did it, rather than how Samsung couldn't. But I guess it's a question of context.

    Money+time+management focus = success.

IMO PA Semi is the single most important prescient acquisition Apple have ever made. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Apple

I would love to see the Keynote slides presented to Apple's board of directors about acquiring PA Semi.

  • Apple Pay overtakes Starbucks for in-store mobile payments

How do Starbucks payments work, does the app display a barcode or QR code or something?
To add to that question, if someone had a compatible iPhone why would they use the Starbucks app at Starbucks when they could use Apple Pay instead? Is it easier? I don't know but doesn't using the app require that you "reload" the virtual card every so often?

Guess the Americans should travel to China and other parts of Asia where mobile payment is a norm.
Customers, especially older ones, think Apple Pay is a gimmick designed to steal their money.
I can't tell you how many people have told me they thought using Apple Pay would require them to pay more for whatever they were buying. The other excuse I have heard against using Apple Pay is that it's "too easy" and would thus lead the user to spend more money.
To answer, the app displays a barcode, yes. And the have special scanners that make it quite easy, but the main reason I use it is that they don’t accept Apple Pay in the store. They do through the app, though. So I load my Starbucks card with Apple Pay, and use it in the store.
I've used ApplePay in multiple Starbucks stores across the US for years. You need to use a different pay terminal device (different from the scanner used by the Starbucks app). I've even successfully used ApplePay in a Starbucks in Taiwan.

Clarification: I do not have the Starbucks app; I pay directly via ApplePay.

Oh please Facebook. Do you give your users free devices? A lot of poorer people in  the 3rd world don’t have access to smartphones. Only dumb phones. Since you say Facebook is for ‘everybody’ put your money where your mouth is & give the next 1 Billion people in 3rd world free phones & internet. You can even get iPhone 4, 4S & 5 ($47,$60 & $100) in India,Pakistan ,Bangladesh & Nepal. So don’t put crap up about all Apple products being expensive.
They did try giving away free internet

    https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-to-beam-free-internet-to-africa/
Remember the Facebook Phone? $99 marked down to $0.99. So they did try to give the hardware away. ;)

  • Apple's own 5G modem expected to land as soon as 2022

    I assume any new 5G modem is actually a 4G + 5G+ since 5G can't go through a cardboard box?
Qualcomm's first 5G chip, the X50, only did 5G, so it needed a companion chip to do 4G/3G/2G. QC's latest (second gen) chip, X55, does all in one chip. I expect that one to be in the 2020 iPhone.

Huawei's Balong 5000 chip does all in one chip.

Not sure about the others (Mediatek, Samsung).

  • With Apple 5G modem likely in 2021, prospects for 5G iPhone in 2020 'in jeopardy'

I’d like to replace my 6s Plus with a new iOS device.
This is a pricey adventure and I want to make sure before I layout $1500-$2000 the device is 5G capable.
Apple could solve this problem quite easily if they could sort out their problems with Qualcomm.
I agree the 5G infrastructure isn’t there yet.  But Apple needs to have their devices 5G ready so it’s only a matter of a iOS update to turn it on.

Figure it out Apple, sooner than later!!!😡
Don't wait for 5G. There are two parts to 5G - the first is the 5G overlay on EXISTING frequencies (less than 6 GHz). The second is the frequency extension to millimeter wave frequencies (25+ GHz). The former should only require a modem change (existing antennas should be OK), but it's the latter that will also require now mmWave antennas to be added - that should take a few phone iterations to get the mmWave antennas optimized.

So I highly suspect that any phone that ships this year that says it supports 5G will only be supporting the first part.
