Good D.E.D. material as usual, but I did notice:
That should be "flak" (without a "c"), not "flack." Flak is anti-aircraft fire; the implied analogy is that a person "taking flak" is akin to an airplane being shot at by gunners on the ground. A "flack," with a "c," is a human being—a P.R. professional.Steve Jobs got flack for explaining....
There's also a subsequent reference to "Appel's rivals," which probably should be Apple's. Though Richard Appel does seem like an interesting guy who possibly has interesting rivals.

Copy-editing tweak:
In the passage “at a time when the company itself” four paragraphs into the article, it’s really not clear which “company” is being referred to. The latter part of the paragraph suggests that it’s Apple, but in the immediate context of that clause, “the company” seems more likely to be Microsoft or one of the smaller corporate entities that are referenced without being named. Which makes the sentence confusing. Perhaps replace “the company” with “Apple”? -
