  • German bank Sparkasse adds Apple Pay support to giro card

    Endlich! I have been waiting on this for nearly 2 years, ever since Apple Pay came to Germany in late 2018. In May 2019 I applied for and added a Klarna VISA card and then late last year added the Sparkasse VISA credit card. Unfortunately, there are still many places here (small gas stations, some bakeries, a few restaurants, etc.) that take only Giro (debit) cards, even if they let you pay via contactless tap-to-pay. So, it is still important that they added it.
    I just added mine to my iPhone and Watch and I’ll take care of the wife’s card tonight.

  • Germany launches coronavirus tracing app using Apple/Google system

    Unfortunately, it seems to only be available in the German iTunes Store. My phone is set to the US iTunes Store and so I cannot download the app even though I would be willing to use it here. 
    I never changed iTunes stores even after I moved here as I had purchased more than a hundred movies from the US store before I moved, and there isn’t an easy way to switch back and forth. 
    When you switch stores Apple only gives you a warning that some items in your library may not be available in your newly selected store. A comprehensive list would be great so that you can see if it is just one old episode of a TV show you bought and haven’t watched 10 years won’t be available after the change or if it means 80% of your movie library will no longer be accessible. 
    Additionally you have to cancel all subscriptions (including Apple Music), spend all store credit in your account and potentially leave your family sharing group. This is just too much trouble to go through for me personally.
    It is a shame that many app developers outside of the US only make their apps available in just one country or a few neighboring countries. Many US developers make their games, productivity and other apps in a wide variety of iTunes storefronts.

    Details about the "iPhone SE 2" were also seemingly claimed, with the model said to sport Touch ID rather than using Face ID as previously rumored, along with adding support for Express Transit.
    I'm not exactly sure what the section in bold above (emphasis added) is referring too.  The original iPhone SE and, indeed all iPhones starting with the 6S, have supported this feature.
    Perhaps they are referring to the Express Transit cards with power reserve feature that debuted with the iPhone XS and XR.  This feature "enables you to quickly pay for rides and is available for up to five hours when your iPhone needs to be charged."

    Under the battery row in the comparison, AI might consider adding quick charge capability. According to the Apple website for the 30w charger, this new 7th gen iPad is capable while the others, of course, are not.

  • Apple issues security software update for 802.11n AirPort Base Station

    I installed this update this morning on 3 of my routers. The recently updated express went from 7.8 to 7.8.1 as mentioned in the article. The gen 5 extreme (non ac) and the old express (gen 1 with wireless n) went from 7.6.9 to 7.8.1.
    Apple’s documentation is a bit unclear regarding this old express. It lists two models of express which neither of which are this particular model. It lists the (now previous) firmware for the n express as 7.8 which was never released for this gen 1 model and the “original” express which didn’t have n and is left on 6.3. I thought I would highlight it since it isn’t spelled out in the article or in Apple’s own support doc and the info may be useful to folks who may still have this same model kicking around.
    In my opinion this was by far the best designed express style router from Apple. It plugged into the wall with no power cable and was really compact. The status LED was big and easy to see. It is nice that a model that was originally released in 2008 is still getting updated.  Apple really tries to keep devices in service for as long as possible. Like Soli said previously, incredible!!
