My systems are Google Free. This isn’t a way to get me excited about Apple Intelligence.

Nothing wrong with that.. but you should be excited about AI, if you like technology... and right now Apple Intelligence is the like the Zune of AI
    Why?
I’m not being snarky I honestly want to know what it would do for me. So far I’ve seen writing tools that will revise my work to remove my voice and style. I’ve seen art tools that make things that are far worse than what I create already. I have not seen anything that makes me think, “Yeah I really want my phone to be able to do that.” The articles here and elsewhere have not sold me on it.

Honest question: Why do I want AI, from Apple or anyone?
What, you don't believe the grifters?

The poorly named "AI" that has been overhyped by terrible companies is actually a decent technology set. It will be *everywhere* eventually, but not in a flashy marketing way. It's going to be more like revolutionizing the way cars burn fuel so they are more efficient. Data gathering, processing, and presentation all benefit from LLMs to an extent, as long as you limit the dataset. Get too big and hallucination rates increase by magnitudes.

So no, there's really no real consumer use cases and likely won't ever be. AI is inherently a boring autocomplete machine that shouldn't even be marketed. Just look at Apple. Word processing and summaries? Yep, that's the best use of the technology. Apple Health data parsing? Also great for users, just not hugely marketable.

Altman tried to make advanced Excel spreadsheet parsing look sexy by saying it'll overturn democracy and end the need to work. The hype cycle is nearing its end and AI will soon fade into a background technology where it should have been all along.
Spot on. I am familiar with ANALYTICAL AI. It’s wonderful. I know what it can do and it is truly amazing. It’s the Generative side of things that has left me cold. And @"Steve Humiston" said I should be excited. I am a tech guy going way back. I love new devices and systems. This technology though has just left me scratching my head as to what all the buzz is about.

  • Apple supplier Pegatron says tariffs will mean third world-style shortages for US

The economy is crashing. Ports are empty. Truck drivers have nothing to transport. Shelves will soon be empty of key goods. The dollar is dropping. Jobs are being lost. People aren't buying anything. There's no flow into the treasury. Our national debt is going up as a result of these tariffs as Americans do without. The global trade continues with the US removed unabated. We're the only ones harmed by this action. No one is negotiating anything.

So yeah, great plan all around so far.
Meanwhile China is removing some tarriffs snd msking exemptions.

Like I said before, it’s too early. Less knee jerk reactions and more balanced analysis before we see the ultimate results.

Nobody like a fight. But sometimes they’re necessary. And when you fight, you don’t do so just to fight. It’s to win. So far, we are seeing other countries wilting.
    We'll see what happens.
That’s all I’m saying. Just wait and see. As much as one side wants to believe trump is an evil bogeyman who can only do wrong, and the other side sees only positive qualities, reality will be what it will be.

China is already slowing export shipments and thst means less sales and less money going to China. They’ll feel it. That’s more money staying in America. Will it result in actual essentials not being available? It’s an interesting question since we don’t get everything from China. But posdible. It’s also posdible China silently shapes up (though not quite admitting so publicly) and everyone benefits. The other option is other countries and even American itself picks up the slack and a new global economy emerges. There are a number of ways it can go.

    But ultimately time will tell.

As I’ve said before, when someone is setting your house on fire, “wait and see” is not a viable response.

I am not reflexively objecting to the tariffs because I don’t like Donald Trump. I am objecting because it is so clearly a bad idea that will do serious damage to our economy..
People forget that this experiment was tried eight years ago. At the start of Trump’s first term he started a trade war with China and by every measure the US lost. China came out solid financially with more allies, and the US with less of both. Repeating the experiment fits Einstein’s definition of insanity.

It sounds over the top when we’re talking about iPhones. Very “First World Problems” kind of thing. But by fall it will be hitting things like food. Do you ever buy grapes or strawberries in the winter? They come from overseas. Clothing? Unless you get your stuff hand made by a local tailor what you get comes from overseas. Plan on decorating for Christmas? Giving small gifts? Guess what…

So either a lot of stuff won’t be available at all, or will be but at hugely inflated prices. Meanwhile people in China will be working to make stuff for the rest of the world. It won’t impact them at all.
