  • 'Sky: Children of the Light' now available to pre-order and will release on July 11

This looks absolutely lovely. But I’m just not interested in ‘social’ games. I play video games when I don’t want to deal with other people. A social aspect, building teams, cooperating, and all that whether in Sky or a FPS is not why I game. But it does look absolutely lovely.

  • Apple's quiet update to Siri Shortcuts brings the niche tool into the mainstream

    Time for a poll:
    Siri disabled
    Siri Shortcuts (active user)
Siri Shortcuts (didn’t know it existed)
    Siri Shortcuts (to much trouble)

    +1 Siri disabled
Siri was silly until the last few updates. Within the last year I've started to use it a fair amount. I also am beginning to dictate things more and more. Siri is working fine. On the other hand I've never found a use for Siri Shortcuts. Maybe I just don't do the kind of repetitive things they're talking about but I haven't found a place that it might be useful. I created one to practice, but I never use it. SS reminds me of AppleScript. That was a great, powerful tool as well. But I found I never used it because it was more hassle to program something to just do it.
Yes. Because it has a horrible user interface. If you haphazardly launch a half-baked product at the gunpoint of the Marketing, then system engineers struggle to turn it into a truly working product in the next major OS update. At its present state Shortcuts is just a proof of concept marketed falsely as a “system feature”.
I hope that's the case because I can see the potential of SS. So far though in practice it just doesn't live up to it.

OUCH! That’s going to leave a mark.
The possible retaliation has the potential to  wreck havoc on our entire economy.
However justified the suspicion , lord Dampnuts just made it clear that he’s using Huawei as a hostage to try to extort trade concessions from China. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48392021 He said something similar about the Huawei CFO that they are trying to extradite from Canada.

  • 'Over the Rainbow' composer's estate sues Apple & others over 'pirated' music sales

Part of the problem is the murky world of who owns what. Somebody writes a song. They own it. They let someone record the song. Do they still own it, or the artist, or the record label? Depends on the contract and sometimes even the people involved don't know. I got flagged on a YouTube video once. I had used a piece of Royalty Free, Public Domain Creative Commons music. It turned out that the musician had the rights to his performance, but not to the original piece he had performed. I had to reedit the video to remove the background music. The theatres I work at buy the rights to the plays and music we put on. We can use it inside the theatre, but we are forbidden from recording it even for our private use, or even doing a live performance of a vignette outside the theatre. It's a bloody minefield.

  • Editorial: Can Apple News+ kill 'fake news' and save journalism?

Reading down the comments here is a good example of why News+ won't make much difference.
So many people only view as "true" what they already believe.
So many people view those with a different point of view as beneath contempt.
One company with a curated news source will not fix that.
Actually I don't think it can be fixed.
The US is now more polarized than it was in the late 1850s.
It's approaching the polarization of Yugoslavia in the late 1980s.
    Everyone talks, but nobody listens.
Everyone demands respect, but is unwilling to give it.
    Everyone insists they are right.
    And everyone else is wrong.
Everyone has their own private set of "facts" that they rely on.
Without checking the source or validity.
Everyone has a group of fellow Americans that they despise.
Everyone has a group of fellow Americans that they blame for all the problems.
No one wants to admit that some of it might be their own fault.
    But I saw that coming.
    It's why I left 12 years ago.
