    This is what I tell people about AI Summaries. They are letting the AI (I.e. whomever programmed the AI) censor what they read.

    I can only speak to our experience:
    We were going to hold onto our iPhone 11s until fall. But the threat of significantly higher prices pushed us to replace them with 16s last month. 
    We were going to get a Pro for me, which we did, and an e for my partner. We were buying them from our cell provider as they had a good deal on upgrades, but they only had one Pro and one base 16 left in stock. They were sold out of all other models. The salesman said that there had been an unexpected surge after Trump started hitting everyone with tariffs. His supplier was caught flat footed too and he wasn’t sure when they would get restocked.
    We are in Canada, I can only imagine it being worse in the US. 


    FWIW Up here all the Apple products we get fly from Shanghai, to Kentucky where they clear customs. Then they get shipped to Windsor Ont where they clear customs again. The fear is we could get clipped by Trump’s tariffs on China AND Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on the US

    It will depend on the developer. RandomGuySoftware located who knows where will have trouble. But when, not if but when, Microsoft, Adobe, Steam, and other big guys set up their own sites people will go there without hesitation. Soon the AppStore will only be hosting small developers.

    I’m not being snarky I honestly want to know what it would do for me. So far I’ve seen writing tools that will revise my work to remove my voice and style. I’ve seen art tools that make things that are far worse than what I create already. I have not seen anything that makes me think, “Yeah I really want my phone to be able to do that.” The articles here and elsewhere have not sold me on it.

    Honest question: Why do I want AI, from Apple or anyone?

    The poorly named "AI" that has been overhyped by terrible companies is actually a decent technology set. It will be *everywhere* eventually, but not in a flashy marketing way. It's going to be more like revolutionizing the way cars burn fuel so they are more efficient. Data gathering, processing, and presentation all benefit from LLMs to an extent, as long as you limit the dataset. Get too big and hallucination rates increase by magnitudes.

    So no, there's really no real consumer use cases and likely won't ever be. AI is inherently a boring autocomplete machine that shouldn't even be marketed. Just look at Apple. Word processing and summaries? Yep, that's the best use of the technology. Apple Health data parsing? Also great for users, just not hugely marketable.

    Altman tried to make advanced Excel spreadsheet parsing look sexy by saying it'll overturn democracy and end the need to work. The hype cycle is nearing its end and AI will soon fade into a background technology where it should have been all along.
    Spot on. I am familiar with ANALYTICAL AI. It’s wonderful. I know what it can do and it is truly amazing. It’s the Generative side of things that has left me cold. And @"Steve Humiston" said I should be excited. I am a tech guy going way back. I love new devices and systems. This technology though has just left me scratching my head as to what all the buzz is about.
