  • UK secretly orders Apple to let it spy on iPhone users worldwide

    Xed said:
Apple could also just pull out of the UK entirely, fire all their UK employees, and stop buying UK goods and services.  I know they won't, but feck all fascist governments.
By that logic, they need to pull out of the USA immediately.
Because Apple is in the US that means they should prop up fascism and a police state?
Not directed at you personally, but people need to learn what fascism is. Fascism is a type of authoritarianism but not authoritarianism is fascism.

Fascism is a far-right system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

The U.K. is capitalist, and we can certainly argue that this would be a stringent movement control the rest of the definition doesn't fit at all. There U.K. isn't governed by the far-right, it isn't a dictatorship, there isn't violent suppression of opposition and the list goes on. So, yeah, not fascism at all
Agreed, the UK isn’t there. The US however…

  • Apple is working on a 'lifelike' robot lamp, and it's just as cute as you'd expect

I fail to see where waving my hand at a lamp to hope and get it to understand where I want it to point is better than just grabbing it and pointing it.

  • Apple's AI ethics doubted by scaremongering shareholder proposal

With OpenAI accused of unethical data collection practices, Apple's association with the company raises further issues.
It has made me reassess my trust in Apple. As the old saying goes, if you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas.
Apple's longstanding partnership with Alphabet on search is mentioned, including how it is an opportunity for Alphabet to collect "massive amounts of data on Apple users." Apple also apparently "explored a partnership with Meta," which the NLPC deems "another serial privacy violator."
More cases which raise concerns in my mind.

  • iOS 18.3 arrives with Visual Intelligence update, notification summary changes

    Some bits of good news:
If you disable Apple Intelligence it removes the cruft it put in there that’s now unneeded. I updated my iPad and Mac and had nearly no net loss of drive space by disabling it.
    https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/save-up-to-21gb-storage-disable-apple-intelligence/
Secondly it can’t run if your system’s language and Siri’s language don’t match. My Mac, actually all of my devices, are set up for English (Canadian), but I run Siri on English (Irish). In every case it disabled Apple Intelligence and gave me a note that they had to match.

So when I updated each system yesterday I did the update, rebooted, switched Siri to English (Canadian), disabled Apple Intelligence, Switched Siri back to English (Irish). I had no noticeable loss in storage space, and Apple Intelligence cannot get enabled even accidentally.

  • Trump's chip tariff threat takes aim at Apple's TSMC partnership

So the tech bros that paid millions to Trump (most of which went into his pocket) for favourable treatment are now going to realize that they got scammed. Scammed by a scammer that has made a career of scamming people. No surprise there. Will this hurt the US? Oh yes, badly. Not just these tariffs, but all the rest he’s pushing for. The US economy is going to be severely damaged, like 1930s level of damage. But to echo @namethespruce this is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. Trump is already doing severe damage to every corner, industry, rule of law, and reputation of the US and it’s only been a week. Wait until you see the desolate hellscape that’s left in four years.
