  • iPhone 12 wireless charging hits 15W with MagSafe, Qi limited to 7.5W

As they’ve removed all accessories this year it would be nice if they gave the option of either including the MagSafe charger instead of the lightning cable and allowing the customer choice of preference. Or at the bare minimum heavily subsidising the cost; particularly for those that don’t need another lightning cable. They’ve also been a bit dishonest or I should say misleading in their marketing as they state that rather than providing accessories they’re including a much faster usb c to lightning cable this year. While that is true, it’s also true that last year we got the same cable for the pro model in addition to an 18 watt power brick....
Again, for recent pro owners and people who purchased separately they don’t likely need the power brick but I think that for first time buyers or people with old 5 Watt adapters, there should be a box to check if they require one. And perhaps offer recycling of old accessories.

  • Apple AR may record full spatial sound needing fewer microphones

Apple should maybe look into the Cetera algorithm and perhaps acquire the company. I don’t know if anyone has ever made any use of the tech outside of the initial demo they did with the virtual barbershop. I know they have done some work with hearing aids but 3D audio-wise I’m uncertain.  I know they achieved that with simple binaural mics but gave an excellent effect of a wide soundstage and distance and in particular the effect of being behind the listener. Much more so than that I’ve heard so far watching movies with AirPods spatial audio. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great start but I’m excited for how far they can take this.

  • First benchmark indicates A14 is major upgrade from A13

The single core alone is almost twice that of the Snapdragon 865 (1,583 vs 870).

The multi-core is a lot closer although you have to consider that the SD865 runs on 8 cores vs 6 on the Apple A14 (Apple has been using 6 cores on the regular A series chip since the A10- the “X” version for the iPad Pro uses 8 cores). For the multi-core the SD865’s GB5 score is around 3,280 vs 4,198 for the A14.

For anyone curious of those numbers In terms of percentages,  it’s 91% faster in single core and 64% more powerful in multicore.

  • Mac with T2 Security Chip required to play 4K Netflix streams in macOS Big Sur

I think it’s likely to do with some of the encoding/decoding capabilities that are built into the T2 chip. I haven’t looked at how Netflix formats it’s 4K or HDR streams but that would be my guess. It may be that the power usage and or thermals are too greatly impacted without the T2 on macOS.

Ouch!! After more than 5 years and countless millions on R+D for project Soli, motion-sense was completely removed from the newest Pixel lineup after only 10 months.  Major burn. The money that they waste on a regular basis is just an absolute sin. They’ve also returned to the more basic fingerprint reader for unlock and security. Notice they’ve added a security core to the processor attempting to ape Apple’s long utilised and well proven Secure Enclave, - Which if rolled out across android would be a boon to its users as they certainly need the security! As it stands being only on the pixel whose dismal sales figures can best place it in the ‘niche’ category, it will doubtless be removed from next years lineup for being too costly and poorly implemented. It’s actually a shame about Soli as it has potential. They’ll likely wait and see what and how Apple plans to utilise its UWB U1 chip before seeing a return, if at all. I think that is one of the reasons for its removal as Apple is being very slow and purposeful, not to mention secretive in what it has planned for U1. This years pixel is very much a mid range handset which surprises me. I’m curious to see if they further improve on nightsight this time too as the camera was the pixels one redeeming quality. Hopefully Apple ups the game even further too.
    From two years ago, 2018:

Google’s new Pixel 3 phones have a “Titan M” security chip. Apple has something similar with its “Secure Enclave” on iPhones. Samsung’s Galaxy phones and other Android phones often use ARM’s TrustZone technology. Here’s how they help protect your phone.

    The Basics

As for Project Soli it's not dead. No idea if The Pixel 4 was meant to be only a testbed device anyway (sad if buyers were guinea pigs all along) or if there were issues discovered after the fact as the reason it's no longer part of this years Pixel phone lineup. Marketing or economic choice, app support lacking, buyers prefer fingerprint readers, not working as designed, all would be potential suspects for not seeing it in the Pixel 5. But there is on-going Soli development by both Google ATAP and 3rd party developers in the area of control surfaces, music, etc, so still a live project developing uses beyond a smartphone.
I have to say I’d never noticed mention of the Titan M before and as they specifically referenced it this time I figured it was a new feature, so admittedly that’s my bad. Thanks for the information. I’m not the greatest authority on android devices.  Regarding SOLI another problem is to do with the bandwidth that it operates on (60Ghz I believe) not being allowed in many territories for these applications or rather restricted for specific use.
