  • iOS 12.1 adds battery management features to iPhone 8 & iPhone X

Hmmm. Apple should have taken the Samsung approach: at the first sign of battery trouble, blow up the phone.

  • Siri improved small business name recognition by using local language models

That’s great and all I just wish they would do something similar for Apple music/iTunes. I’m Italian and I listen to a lot of foreign particularly French, Spanish and Italian as well as more obscure world music and it’s a nightmare trying to use Siri in this regard. Would be nice if they at least added a way to teach it how to pronounce artists and songs (similar to teaching how to pronounce contacts) as a stopgap measure until they can remedy the issue completely.

  • Samsung continues anti-iPhone X crusade with three new videos

These adverts are pitiful and a real compliment to Apple ultimately; It shows the level of desperation within Samsung electronics. They’re clearly panicking about their customers jumping ship. I’d love to be a fly on the wall at corporate. These sort of ads never do the client any favours in my opinion. Moreover, if these silly non-issue complaints are the biggest faults with the X then Apple don’t have much to worry about. I’ve had mine since launch and while the notch is clearly a small compromise, it really doesn’t bother me and I’m quite finicky about design and details. I have the 256GB and have always gone for top storage so SD cards have never been an issue for me. Frankly they come with their own trade offs with regard to data read/write being much slower and corruption issues, people not realising the problem of hot swapping them etc. As for split screen, I mean seriously that sort of multitasking on a small device is pointless, completely the wrong tool for the job and anyone who “needs” to have a YouTube video or something in view while they’re performing some other task likely has psychological problems. All in all I’m very happy with my purchase, and I can’t see these ads having any material impact on Apple customers so really they’re a waste of their ad budget.

  • What is Apple's True Tone technology on the 2018 MacBook Pro, and why does it matter?

Regarding the touch bar, while it may not seem particularly useful at present, anybody who truly knows Apple is aware that they play the long game. Time and time again they introduce features that we initially think have little utility and then suddenly it all falls into place and you find yourself thinking how obvious and inevitable it was in hindsight. They always implement the foundations for new innovation years in advance of introducing the main features. There are too many examples of this to mention, but when they first introduced Touch ID most people thought it was unnecessary while I saw potential - it paved the way for Apple Pay as well as enabling robust security. The Face ID module is another. The key with most things Apple is future potential.

  • Supposed 'iPhone SE 2' screen protector again hints at sensor notch

What people aren’t considering, I don’t think, and of course this is pure conjecture on my part, but if they were to stick with the design of the iPhone 5 family of devices, the display/screen is flat which adds about 3mm of usable space compared to the curved X design to cram the TrueDepth components in. They could conceivably release an iPhone SE2 with Touch ID and a slightly larger LCD display, and an iPhone XSE with OLED and more premium pricing as well as the flagship model. I personally don’t see the value in a larger X model now they once again have the sweet spot with screen size to device size. And considering the amount of X’s sold compared to the 8 plus, one has to wonder whether Apple thinks it’s worth it. I tried an 8plus for a couple of weeks while waiting on the X and it was very unwieldy. Plus I think the product portfolio in general is getting a bit silly with too much choice. Just my opinion.
