  • Zuckerberg wants to 'inflict pain' on Apple for privacy changes

    I’ve had a Facebook account since 2007 but I left every one of their platforms last year and never looked back. Sure, connecting with family and friends is marginally more difficult but my mental health is much better and I’m not feeding their “outrage-for-profit” model with my data.
    I’m about a year behind you, having closed Facebook and Instagram last month. Quality of life is already improving.
    I made the same decision in may 2014 and I agree entirely. Frankly I feel a great swell of pity for people who use it. I have friends and family whom I can see getting reeled in by all the trash, bickering, false narratives and propaganda, and it’s a vicious cycle for people. I take pride that I’ve encouraged at least a few of them to leave it behind. They’ve all said how much better they feel for it. It’s perfectly feasible to communicate with signal and FaceTime for those at a distance and it encourages actually spending time socialising properly with those that I can. (Pandemic aside of course)

  • Apple brings next-hour precipitation to Weather in the UK and Ireland

    I’m in the U.K on iOS 14.4 and I already have next hour, and hyper-local precipitation forecasting for weather widget and app.

  • Apple updates MagSafe support with medical device warning

    @thrang ;

    The issue is not with the inductive charging of the MagSafe, which works the same as any other Qi charger basically. The problem is with the permanent magnets that encircle the charging coil on the handset along with the two alignment magnets situated underneath. Therefore it cannot be resolved how you suggest. I am surprised though that in this day and age they have not included any magnetic shielding for sensitive components such as the Reed switches. It would certainly be a worthwhile addition if possible.

  • Apple starts early work on folding iPhone, testing in-screen Touch ID for 'iPhone 13'

    Regarding the inefficiencies of wireless charging - if people are referring to Qi chargers constantly pinging for a device and using a steady stream of current then I wonder if it would be feasible to add some sort of miniaturised Reed switch(or similar) into the MagSafe charger to ensure that it is not activated until a device is connected. I always wondered why something along those lines had not been baked into the Qi standard. If people are meaning simply that induction is less efficient than wired charging well then this is actually rather negligible in the grand scheme of things.

    Adding a fingerprint sensor for an additional layer of security or as an alternative for when Face ID is unsuitable is perfectly feasible, and a welcome addition for many. But this is twice now I see the reference to them purchasing from Qualcomm. The likelihood that Apple purchases outside biometric tech is almost non existent. They own Authentec and still maintain their own R&D on fingerprint sensors. One need only to look at the newest iPad Air with its minuscule sensor built into the power switch to see what a non starter this is. I think that’s a more elegant solution for the iPhone if they add it to the sleep/wake button rather than adding unnecessary complexity and expense to the display. Not to say that’s outside the realm of possibility, as they have their own patents for several methods of in display sensors. Apple aims to be as vertically integrated as possible is all.

    As for removing the port, this is inevitable whether it be in the short term or five years from now. Apple have stated that the future is wireless for a long time now. The end goal of course is to have true over-the-air wireless charging, similar to tech popularised by energous, but in the interim MagSafe is a satisfactory alternative, and undoubtedly an improvement on the Qi standard. Another benefit of removing the port will be that it cuts off Greykey and Cellebrite at the knees as they shall have no way of tethering their equipment to iOS devices. At least until and only if they find a way to achieve the same goal wirelessly. It remains to be seen how the game of cat and mouse will continue but no doubt it will piss off the security services....
