  • Apple has a clear path to a $3 trillion market cap, says Gene Munster

$3T?  We're already 73% of the way there, and a 36% rise in the stock price will get us there.  Today was a profit taking setback.  I am of two minds when I hear these prognosticators...
The first is that they are investors trying to drive the price up, and the other is that they're short sellers trying to drive the price down, so they can cover their sell, and then re-buy at the lower price.

  • Netatmo doorbell, leaked Hue gear, and our picks for 2020 on the HomeKit Insider Podcast

Regarding the Circle View doorbell, it appears that it features an LED spotlight to allow for "full color" night time video. Reading the device's FAQ, this LED spotlight will remain on all night unless you disable it using the Home app. They recommend as an alternative that you leave your porch light on all night, or you attach your porch light to a motion sensor that will turn it on when motion is detected.

Maybe some people would like that, but the better option would be for them to use an infra-red spotlight and camera function, like they do with the Netatmo doorbell and also Circle View's regular HomeKit cameras. I have a couple of those, and a set of Arlo cameras that also use infra-red tech for night vision. The resulting video is black-and-white, but the cameras aren't disruptive to me, my neighbors or nocturnal nature. Given how often the cameras are triggered at night by passing cars, raccoons, rabbits, and other wildlife, I'd hate them if they used visible spectrum spotlights. Some of us like it to actually be dark outside at night. This doorbell camera's dependence on visible-spectrum light takes it completely off my list.
I'll let you know how it behaves... My Logitech Circle camera is arriving today to replace the Arlo I bought a couple of weeks ago.  It was one of those, "oh crap... I just bought this because there were no Homekit doorbells in the US..."  Then, AppleInsider had the article...

  • Group of online heavyweights bands together to defend Section 230

    zimmie said:
The wild part is eliminating Section 230 would ultimately just consolidate power into the hands of already-rich media companies. All the conclusions you can reach via Section 230 can also be reached via the First Amendment, but it will take vastly more money and time to get there. Small sites like this one would have to shut down anything which accepts arbitrary input from users, while sites like Facebook could keep operating while they spend years and millions of dollars on the court case. Then after all that, Facebook would win (after all, they're not a government, so they have freedom of speech, and choosing what you want to publish and what you want to remove is speech), and the smaller sites would have been crushed, so Facebook wins again!
It is a conundrum, and I can see both sides of the case.  A few things that could have happened, but didn't:
President Trump could have just started using Parler rather than Twitter.  It would probably crush Parler's servers, but getting 73M users on their platform would probably help their bottom line.  It's nice that Parler doesn't care what you put on there, and puts the onus of finding the truth on the reader, rather than an algorithm.
MeWe can take off, and make Facebook the MySpace of the 2010's.
People that don't like the "Big Guys in Social Media" can make their own platform, and make it better than the existing ones, and people will generally start going to them, then there's a tipping point, and then the masses will join.  (Again with the MySpace thing).

Jack Dorsey, Zuckerberg, et al don't have to care about Section 230.  They weren't around 10 years ago, and they can go away, and if there's something better, people won't care.  Their platform is made of nothing except the imagination of those that contribute to it.

  • Facebook launches new initiative to fight against iOS 14 ad tracking protections

Facebook has been deleted from my iPhone 10, and never installed on my 12 PRO MAX.

I've said this before, and I hope I'm correct:
Apple views your privacy as part of who you are, and selling that is abhorrent to them.

Facebook/Google/name it views your privacy as something to market, sell, and get rich from, and you are an idiot for not giving them free access to it.

This is exactly why the first place I go after getting a new iPhone is to settings, where I switch to DuckDuckGo.

  • Ecosia now a default search engine option on iOS, iPadOS, macOS

The main issue with DuckDuckGo and Ecosia is in the name.

    What's in a name?

    Let me Google that.

It's frankly difficult to say, "Let me DuckDuckGo that," or "Ecosia it"

At a point 20 years ago, google was a rhyme for the noun googol, representing 10^100.
Now, it's a verb for searching things.

To be pedantic, "Google" is the search engine company, "googol" is 10^100.
I thought I stated that in the 5th line, but rereading it, I shouldn't multitask while posting...  (and I should capitalize proper nouns... ;)
