  • Mac desktop shootout -- $3500 iMac 5K versus $1700 Mac mini

One of my 5,1 Mac Pros with a dual-quad core 2.66, and four 4GB RAM chips scores 2219 single core and 13563 multi. My bigger 3.46 12-core with Mojave is currently in pieces for a northbridge re-heat sink, but IIRC that was about 3000 single core, and 23000 multi.

The drive bus is SATA 2 -- fine for spinning metal, but less so for SSDs. Onboard USB is 2.0 as well, but that's surmountable with a $30 PCI-E card. That, plus a video card doesn't leave a lot of room for expansion.

Drive speeds without SSD compares favorably to the iMac 5K in that regard, but the Mac mini completely blows the Mac Pro away without adding a PCI-E card with M.2 capability, and even then, the Mac mini drive is still faster. The same RX580 in the Mac Pro is a little slower than it is with an eGPU enclosure on the new Mac mini, by about 10%, but this varies depending on the workload.

I love and loved my Mac Pros, but the day is upon them, when the i7 mini is faster.
Single core, the Mac Mini crushes the Mac Pro true but the Mac Pro wasn't designed to have stellar single core performance.  The rx-580 is FASTER in the Mac Pro than the Mac Mini in every real world GPU test I have seen on BareFeats.com.  Also, looking at geekbench results doesn't tell you much of anything.  A much better test is Cinebench r15 which actually puts a 100% load on the CPUs and in that, even my 3.33 12 core Mac Pro gets a score of 1550cp.  That is 400 higher than the highest level Mac Mini.  As for SSD speeds, who cares when you have a very fast 128GB SSD that is going to be pretty much useless for anything due to its tiny size?  If you don't like SATA II, you can buy a SATA 3 PCIe card for like 30 bucks so I don't really see the issue there.

  • Apple diagnostics software blocks third-party repairs of 2018 MacBook Pro and iMac Pro

It never ceases to amaze me how beta most Apple users are.  Anything Apple does is fine in their book.  Make computer RAM, Hard drives and batteries non replaceable in a glued together computer that costs twice as much?  Thank you Apple!  Apple then creates programming to prevent people from fixing their own computers and people are actually applauding and defending this!  Wow.  No wonder Apple is doing this, it seems Apple users are willing to take unlimited amounts of abuse.  I have been an Apple computer user exclusively since the early 90s.  I have owned everything from a 7500 to a g3, g4, g5, core solo, core 2 duo and i5 mac minis, 5 imacs, and a mac pro tower but I am afraid I can not support the company anymore.  I will continue to use my 3 macs until they are not functional but when they are dead, I am either building a hackintosh or just changing to PC.

I have no doubt Apple users will call me a hater, or liar.  They will defend Apple as just caring about functionality and security... that is all total BS.  Apple cares about turning a profit and forcing people to buy more computers and more accessories.  Apple repairs are absurdly expensive so you will basically be forced to buy another computer if a stick of RAM dies, or your battery dies, or your hard drive dies.  Those things happen ROUTINELY.
