Editorial: No WSJ, Apple isn't stuck in China
Shipping thousands of parts from many countries half a world away to assemble in the US is super expensive compared to choosing a location where most of the parts are made and just shipping the finished product to the US. This is a no brainer. If you want to bring back manufacturing to the US, you must bring back everyone including the parts and component suppliers, train a new generation of manufacturing engineers and technicians, build a distribution system, establish auxillary services and improve access to raw/direct materials etc. It would take decades. -
Singapore Airlines goes all-in on iPads for pilot flight books
longfang said:coolfactor said:In order to account for weight on the plane, they should charge customers based on the height/weight ratio of their own bodies, after a certain reasonable threshold. Do you think that would be too discriminatory? The Western population, at least, has gotten heavier.
Now, on the topic of iPads, it sounds like pilots are assigned their own iPads, which they carry from one flight to the next, instead of the iPads being assigned to specific planes.
Also, I'm curious about the gradient blue background on those apps. Do they do usability testing to find out if an all-black background would be better for the eyes?
The blue background is because it’s one of their corporate colors. -
Apple power chip supplier Dialog Semiconductor isn't seeing a reduction in orders
I have said this before, but really, supplier forecasts are wildly inaccurate for predicting how a product is selling. Supply management strategies change all the time. Sometimes you can buy every part you need all at once and store them for the entire life cycle of the product. Other times you can hedge your bets partially by buying 6 months worth of parts. Apple does not appear to be a Just-in-time delivery company. It's entirely possible they keep large inventories of parts. When you have lots of supply in storage, how much you buy from them on a weekly basis does not have any real meaning, does it?
