  • How Apple's Files app is getting better in iOS 16 & iPadOS 16

Any option to format empty/un-initialized media into HFS, APFS, or exFAT? If not, then before you can use an empty disk with the iPad and its Files app, you still need a computer first.  What about the option to unmount media, so as to protect from data loss? Android can unmount.. can the iPad safely unmount media?

Why not? Experiencing absolute kickass performance, running on a single solar panel on your roof ;)
From what I’ve gathered, Apple Silicon has a lot of non-public documented features, if you will, which makes porting OS to it difficult.
Yes that is  true and not all features of the MacBook are working in Linux. They still have to implement proper GPU support, as well as bring up the thunderbolt bus. Undocumented features. Apple doesn’t make it easy on Linux developers but the asahi team is doing amazing things.

  • Google takes six years to copy Apple in releasing 'Switch to Android' app for iOS

Waiting for the inevitable antitrust lawsuit.

Move To iOS can transfer your message history since Android can grant permission to read SMS. However, Switch to Android can’t copy iMessages to Android because Apple has no such permission to grant access.

Therefore, Apple preventing access to iMessage via permissions is just another attempt by Apple to make it difficult to switch.

Who would want to switch to Android willingly? Honestly?
Android isn’t so bad. it is very customizable in terms of being able to run custom app launchers and so forth. Definitely some cool apps like wifi explorer and so forth that aren’t in the iOS App Store (but curiously are in the macOS App Store).  Also Google’s apps like YouTube and YouTube tv have had Picture in Picture functionality in android for years, while such features are only now being rolled out to iOS. Would I switch to android over iOS, no I wouldn’t. But I can definitely see why certain users prefer it. It does give you more choice over what apps you can use on your phone, and that is a valid perspective.

  • Johny Srouji says the Apple Silicon strategy challenged Apple

Out of all the desktop/laptop OEMs out there Apple was the only one with the balls to strike out on its own. As the article points, with tremendous risk and challenges. The rest remain locked down to whatever Intel or AMD does or does not have to offer. But since the debut of the M1 suddenly other OEMs are investigating producing their own SOCs.

One thing is certain for those of us who keep riding the Apple log flume, it’s a thrilling ride and you never know what’s around the corner, just like an Indiana Jones movie.
Apple is unique in that its the only laptop vendor that has its own operating system. And that is the singular reason why Apple could ditch x86 and continue to be relevant. I’m sure Asus, HP and others would probably want to use another chip architecture besides x86 to diversify their portfolios.  But there’s not a merchant ARM vendor out there with high performance CPUs in terms of rivaling AMD and Intel for the client market.

The quintessential question is if they adopted ARM or another chip architecture, what OS would they run? What productivity apps would they run? What gaming apps would they run?

A large part of the reason why Intel and AMD continue to remain dominant is because of Microsoft’s dominance, especially in enterprise. Even when NVidia and Qualcomm unleash ARM chips into the ecosystem, those chips will have to run windows (on arm) to be of any relevance. If they don’t run windows and key windows apps well, no one will want to buy them.

So Apple definitely has to be respected for its engineering prowess in designing and brining Apple silicon to market. But apple is unique in that it controls an OS and has the power to enable apple silicon to run the apps that people need. So it’s more than just balls to move on, it’s also controlling the software stack as well, something the competition cannot do very easily.

  • Despite Thunderbolt, iPad to Mac communication is still a mess

Seems to be a firmware bug. However I've noticed that if I use a thunderbolt 4 dock with the m1 max as the host, connecting the iPad pro to one of the dock's downstream tb4 ports with a tb4 cable works. Direct Mac to iPad via a tb4 cable doesn't work, but a tb4 dock in the middle works.

Curiously, the iPad pro doesn't connect in thunderbolt mode, it connects via USB at 10 gbps.  So for some unknown reason whenever the iPad interfaces with the Mac via a tb3 or tb4 cable, a thunderbolt connection is not established, even though both ends have a thunderbolt controller. Apple needs to adress this.

Sidecar via WiFi works okay sometimes but sometimes it stutters or freezes. Usually restarting the connection works but sometimes I need to restart the iPad. Sidecar via USB works flawlessly. The only issue is YouTube tv displaying a black image in safari if sidecar is connected. But if I use opera or chrome(with hardware acceleration disabled) YouTube tv works well with sidecar connected.
