  • Apple issues iOS 15.7.5, iPadOS 15.7.5, macOS Monterey, Big Sur security updates

Updating OS for, say, a 10 year old MacBook Air (or 9 year old iMac) is quite impressive support.

  • Lost Apple Watch spends a night in the ocean, found in working condition

I’m surprised the GPS signal worked whilst underwater…

  • New malware steals Mac passwords & sends them with Telegram

While using my Safari browser a few months ago, a popup prompted me to enter an administrators name and password.  No mention of who or why they were asking.
A bit like when you use sign on with Apple. Browser asks for your Mac credentials! How easy would it be to fake that to harvest local usernames and passwords.

I always cancel that and sign in with the website’s credentials saved in keychain. Seems much safer.

  • What is Display Scaling on Mac, and why you (probably) shouldn't worry about it

Open Question that’s tangentially related: I’m looking at upgrading to a new Mac Mini. Originally I was thinking a dual display set up, but then I thought maybe one of those ultra wide displays. Something like a Dell Alienware AW3423DW, or LG 40WP95C. Not necessarily those exact models, just something like that.

Anyone ever tried this, especially with an M-series Mini? Would it be happy driving a monitor like that?
I set my sister up with a 40WP95C at her office, for use with her M1 Air. The only issue is she didn't like the default resolution as elements were too big, and the next 'more space' option down made things too small for her liking. So even revealing the extra resolution options in macOS, and trying SwitchResX, didn't result in settings we wanted. I had to set up DisplayDummy ——— huh, looks like that's been updated to be even better as BetterDisplay and doesn't require mirroring to a dummy display (don't ask, it was a little convoluted, but worked fine after it was initially set up) — get this: https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay

That said, I wasn't super impressed with the brightness on that display, and don't care for curved screens given I work in design. YMMV.

That AlienWare is going to brighter, but less sharp as it's only 3440x1440 (it's a gaming monitor). The LG is a 5K2K, albeit larger as well.
Better Display is great and Istvan the developer is very responsive. Well worth checking it out, I use it for PowerPoints in Presentation mode and then sharing onto the dummy display during Zoom calls. Free version is fine, the free trial is perfect and well worth $15 to support a great developer. I am not Istvan! 🤣
