  • Amazon says users don't own content bought on Prime Video

There isn't anything unusual here - that's the same licensing terms as on CDs, DVDs, Computer Games, pretty much every digital media…

*still handy to remind people - there will be newbs here.
Not quite the same.  I have stacks of DVD's and Blu-Ray's that have been on my shelves for 10 years.  They aren't going anywhere and will always be available to play.
A movie purchased at Apple that the studio has decided it did not want to sell through Apple anymore would be gone the next time I wanted to play it.  POOF!  Sure, download it.  Right.  No one does that except maybe to an iPad or iPhone then what good is it?  Get a new phone or iPad and the download is gone.

  • Evidence mounting that Apple is preparing alternative to Google search

If Apple Search is anything like Apple Maps or Siri, NO THANKS!  If someone can give me an alternative to Google Search that is AS GOOD, then I might switch, but I know, in fact, there isn't one.  Someone above said DuckDuckGo isn't as good, and ever try Bing?  It's a joke.

Be careful what you wish for.

  • Epic Games vs Apple -- The continuing App Store saga

    flydog said:
I for one support Epic's stance on this. I went down to my local Apple Store and asked to sell used Android tablets in a little used part of the store, and manager kicked me out. I think it's absurd that Apple is exerting its monopoly over its own retail space to exclude other sellers from offering competing products.

I also side with Epic.  I do not buy the "Poor Apple has spent so much to develop it's ecosystem and now Epic wants to play for free" defense.
First, the iPhone would fail if not for apps.  The iPhone does not exist for developers, the developers exist to keep the hardware fresh, new, and usable.  All the amazing things the iPhone can do is because of the developers.  Without them, would you buy a $1000 device to make calls?

Second, I think it's absolutely highway robbery to charge 30% for in-app purchases...purchases that actually have nothing to do with Apple except them processing the payment.  Thank God that when you walk into a store and whip out your CC, the store doesn't add 30% onto your purchase just for using their payment processing system.  As it is, most stores eat 3% of the purchase right there by their CC payment system.

Third, if Apple has spent so much on R&D and their ecosystem, then why do developers who offer FREE apps get a pass?  Are they not using the same marketing and distribution network as those that are charging for their apps?  (minus the payment processing system, which comes back to Apple charging 30% to process a payment vs industry standard 3%).  Is Apple losing BILLIONS in revenue by allowing free apps or are they overcharging paid app developers to make up for the free ones?

In the end, to make things fair, I think Apple needs to change the base developer rules.  Instead of charging everyone $99 to be a developer, raise the initial fee to developers who are developing an apps that they charge for.  And charge even more if your app has in-app purchases.  Then, either charge the industry-standard fee to process purchases for and IN the app, or allow the app developers to process their own IN APP payments.

  • Apple tells users to erase, restore iPhone and Apple Watch to fix Workout GPS data bug

This can be a nightmare having to reset my iPhone AND Apple Watch!  When I got my iPhone 11 PRO MAX a year ago, it was DAYS before it totally restored all my data to the phone!  Pictures especially.  Then have to re-do all my Apple Pay cards?  God knows what else I'll have to spend hours setting back up, not to mention the DATA that is going to be used on my internet plan (yes, we are capped at 1TB at home) downloading all my cloud data back.

I can see that my walks are no longer being mapped as of 09/18/20.  So apparently I am affected, although I could care less about the maps.  I walk the same route every day.

But I am having HomeKit camera issues that are GPS related.  Cameras that are set to OFF when Home, are not turning on when I am AWAY.  I wonder if this is related?

  • Some Apple Watch Series 3 owners dealing with crashes after watchOS 7 update

    sgordon said:
I couldn't update either of my family's Apple Series 3s due to the lack of memory, but I found that it worked to do a factory reset and then perform the update. I am seeing worse battery performance, and yesterday my watch crashed twice while just sitting idle on my wrist. I hope they manage to resolve these issues.
Un pair and re pair, seems to even be fine if you restore from backup when you re pair. Had this problem for two years now because I have a lot of data, even my son has it now with almost nothing on his phone.
Not necessary (for me).  My S3 (bought on day one of release) also could not install watchOS 7 due to not enough memory.  I did not even have any songs or such on it, but a half-dozen photos (not sure how they got there), but basically nothing.

What I did was simply to restart it (not factory reset, not unpair/re-pair) and after the 2nd restart there was enough memory free.  It seems each reset does a sort of garbage collection and frees up memory.  The first restart frees up a bunch, then the 2nd restart frees up more.  Even if you're very close but not quite what it says you need, try the update.  It worked for me for 7.0.1 when it said I needed 2GB but only had 1.9GB free.

Both for watchOS 7.0 and 7.0.1 I got the "not enough storage" and a double restart fixed it both times.  No loss of data, no having to redo Apple Pay cards, nothing.

Just TWO restarts (a restart being when you hold crown button and side button at the same time until you see the Apple logo).
