You need a backup plan before you move to macOS Catalina
Time machine can back up to as many drives as you want, rotating the hourly backups through them sequentially. I currently use my wife’s iMac’s external as the over-the-network backup location for all of the other macs in the house which also backup to hard drives that are directly connected.
