  • Google wants Gemini AI deal with Apple by mid-2025

My systems are Google Free. This isn’t a way to get me excited about Apple Intelligence.

Nothing wrong with that.. but you should be excited about AI, if you like technology... and right now Apple Intelligence is the like the Zune of AI
    Why?
I’m not being snarky I honestly want to know what it would do for me. So far I’ve seen writing tools that will revise my work to remove my voice and style. I’ve seen art tools that make things that are far worse than what I create already. I have not seen anything that makes me think, “Yeah I really want my phone to be able to do that.” The articles here and elsewhere have not sold me on it.

Honest question: Why do I want AI, from Apple or anyone?
What, you don't believe the grifters?

The poorly named "AI" that has been overhyped by terrible companies is actually a decent technology set. It will be *everywhere* eventually, but not in a flashy marketing way. It's going to be more like revolutionizing the way cars burn fuel so they are more efficient. Data gathering, processing, and presentation all benefit from LLMs to an extent, as long as you limit the dataset. Get too big and hallucination rates increase by magnitudes.

So no, there's really no real consumer use cases and likely won't ever be. AI is inherently a boring autocomplete machine that shouldn't even be marketed. Just look at Apple. Word processing and summaries? Yep, that's the best use of the technology. Apple Health data parsing? Also great for users, just not hugely marketable.

Altman tried to make advanced Excel spreadsheet parsing look sexy by saying it'll overturn democracy and end the need to work. The hype cycle is nearing its end and AI will soon fade into a background technology where it should have been all along.

Moderation note: No, AppleInsider didn't make this post needlessly political. It is the news, we reported it. Whether you agree with it or not is not part of the calculation.

Once again you are NOT the center of the universe. The overwhelming majority of people online have a Google account and use at least some of their services (Search, Gmail, Maps, YouTube).

My guess is that you have watched YouTube video and guess what, Google knows that someone using a particular browser with your IP address block watched some video even if you didn't log into a Google account. Same with seeing a little Google Map widget on some store's webpage. And you've probably purchased something online from a merchant who uses an order fulfillment delivery service that utilizes Google Maps for address location. So even if you don't have a Google account, some merchant knows that DAalseth lives at 101 Main Street Apt 42, Curmudgeonville, USA and passed that information along to UPS.

Whether not any given feature helps out any single individual is irrelevant. What matters is how it addresses a significant portion of the user base.

Your usage case -- while important to you -- is not the sole one on this planet. We already know that Joe Consumer has started using ChatGPT and other AI chatbot assistants. It's becoming more mainstream every day whether you like it or not.

You hate AI. We get it. Yet having a temper tantrum on an anonymous Q&A forum won't make it go away. There will be more AI in twelve months than today.  And there's no one pointing a gun at your head saying you need to use every single feature on all of your devices. For example, you are free to use Photo Image Cleanup and not use AI Writing Tools. Or you can use Genmoji and not Mail Summaries.

So get used to it or throw all your tech away and go back to chiseling cuneiform on stone tablets and navigating with paper roadmaps you got at the local AAA office.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

      :)
This is a bit of an overreaction. People are free to use Google or not. I personally don't use Google either and I doubt Gemini on iPhone will be used by me either.

idk about the user, but I don't use Google products because of their business model and the damage they have done to the free and open internet. I understand the tools are popular. But funny enough, using Apple products does make me more immune to Google's snooping. Sure, a widget might get an IP, but it is an iCloud Private Relay IP.

And idk if you know this, but addresses are public. That's not really what people mean by privacy. People don't want every datapoint about themselves to be gathered into one centralized location and used for poorly targeted ads. It's not that hard to understand.

And no one has to throw their tech away. I get by just fine without Google. I also happily use Apple Intelligence tools, Apple Maps, etc. To each their own. Not sure why you reacted so vehemently to a person's personal choice.

  • Apple supplier Pegatron says tariffs will mean third world-style shortages for US

Deleted, yet again, a post commenting on moderation decisions. It's not about what you think is true or real. Ranting continuously in every thread that breaths the words "Donald Trump" about how right, cool, and strong he is is not only disruptive, it just doesn't reflect reality. It would be like if we allowed a person to go into every thread and say Australia doesn't actually exist because it couldn't fit on a flat earth.

This isn't some leftist ideal or derangement syndrome, it is simple provable fact. Trump is a disruptive, weird, chaotic presence in the White House and pretending otherwise is just odd, even if you like the guy.

Im not telling this individual to never post here again. We just want these conversations to be grounded in reality. Spreading misinformation and worshiping the collapse of the United States isn't something that will ever be tolerated. If you want to dispute people on this matter, share actual, provable datapoints instead of repeating "wait and see." This isn't religion, we aren't making decisions based on faith in your deity. The numbers go down, and until they go up, things are pretty bad out there. People can't afford to "wait and see."

The reality is that the economy is down for the first time in 3 years. People are being abducted in the streets by federal agents wearing plain clothes. Houses of innocents are being raided. Research programs responsible for finding treatments to deadly diseases are being shut down. Ports are emptying. Travel has been decimated. Truckers are about to lose their jobs. And there are many more problems beyond that. People have a right to be scared.

So yes, suggesting otherwise is disruptive and causes threads to derail into a debate over what is real and what is not. And I only see two or three accounts in our forums insisting that falsehoods are true.

We're not banning people for liking Trump and we encourage differing opinions. Go ahead and like the guy even. Just don't say things about Trump and his administration that are blatantly untrue and easily proved wrong. Why spread lies?

It's easy to spot really. A political statement, which is allowed by our rules is something like "I like tariffs" or "Apple should build iPhones in America." Misinformation is like "Trump is a strong leader and America has never been better." Or "The market is only down because of reactionary leftists." See the difference? One is an opinion based on policy while the other is weird North Korea style propaganda that is easily proven to be incorrect.

If you can't tell the difference, don't post on political topics! Find a different forum to share that misinformation.

I doubt anyone will even see this. I just needed to vent on the subject. These are trying times and I don't want to see our forums filled with arguments over what is real and what is not. Things are already crazy enough.

The economy is crashing. Ports are empty. Truck drivers have nothing to transport. Shelves will soon be empty of key goods. The dollar is dropping. Jobs are being lost. People aren't buying anything. There's no flow into the treasury. Our national debt is going up as a result of these tariffs as Americans do without. The global trade continues with the US removed unabated. We're the only ones harmed by this action. No one is negotiating anything.

So yeah, great plan all around so far.
Meanwhile China is removing some tarriffs snd msking exemptions.

Like I said before, it’s too early. Less knee jerk reactions and more balanced analysis before we see the ultimate results.

Nobody like a fight. But sometimes they’re necessary. And when you fight, you don’t do so just to fight. It’s to win. So far, we are seeing other countries wilting.
    We'll see what happens.
