  • Starlink Wars: Elon Musk still battling Apple over iPhone satellite connectivity

Apple may need to restructure as a parent company with a computing arm, a communications arm, entertainment, transportation, etc. in order to avoid too much government oversight.

Spacex, etc. would be wise to introduce a satellite connected phone and computing lineup.

Over the weekend, I finished switching my dad’s satellite setup from wild blue to starlink. Oh my gosh. Soooooooo much faster. And unlimited data instead of the expensive low allotment my dad would run out of two weeks into the month. Not only that, but the service is priced better and we will see how it does in rough weather.

Apple should do satellites and if not, partner with the best, regardless of differences. Would be great to use starlink for iPhone when traveling overseas. The current methods are way too annoying, expensive, etc.

Apple is so big as it is that hostile governments will always be looking to take it down a notch. A restructuring may be in order if it wishes to expand its industrial footprint further.

The last thing the world needs is more satellites. And I don't believe breaking up Apple is a good idea because, unlike Alphabet, every piece of Apple's business is intrinsically linked. Governments have never had to deal with mega corps like Apple, Amazon, Google, etc. The laws are being written and revised in real time. I expect we'll eventually arrive at a place that lets Apple exist as it is but with laws that allow competition. It's just going to take time.

  • Trump demands 25% tariff on any iPhone not made in the US

Don't feed the trolls because at this point that's all I can assume they are. Dislike the post. Ignore the poster. Move on. Attention gives them power. Flag posts that violate the rules and move on.
Or you could, since you do have this power, delete their posts and ban their accounts. Just a suggestion.
The problem is they are not breaking rules, just saying weird stuff that comes off cultish. Can't just ban them.
Hmmmm, who wrote those rules? Can they never be updated when situations warrant it?
This is off topic and you can always email any staff if you want to raise an issue, but I'll answer this here once. We're always updating the rules. Look a the rule sheet. Mentions of "fake news" didn't exist at one point. Also, look at the pinned topic in the forums about political content. That's us explaining our strategy.

Users are allowed to have opinions, even if they are wrong. We are just forum moderators, not arbiters of justice and truth. If a post is at least close to the topic, isn't insulting an individual, and follows the rules, it can stay up. We're not going to delete comments just because we or our forum members disagree. And we're not going to see every comment ever, so if you see a comment that violates the rules, it isn't because we chose to leave it up, but that we missed it. So flag it for us.

We've provided users with tools. Ignore someone if you believe they're never going to say anything you want to see or interact with. Report posts when they violate the rules. Or, at a minimum, use the dislike function to show other users that the post isn't representative of the forum as a whole. If you choose to respond, do so respectfully, even if the person you're responding to won't show the same care. Evidence, kindness, and straightforward thinking are the perfect weapon against ignorance and hate.

Don't meet them on their level. Don't try to convince them or change their mind. Discuss, share your opinion, or don't. If you've ever argued with a child, you'll understand it is a waste of time.

If you believe you have an idea for how the moderation team should make decisions on certain posts, feel free to share it. This is a complicated matter, and while certain folks here seem hell bent on worshipping an entity, we can't just ban them for that. But I've seen the forum members here use the tools I've described to show they don't agree, and that works.

And if they are a troll, they are walking up to the line without crossing it. Keep up the pressure. Ignore, dislike, and don't give them any oxygen. They'll eventually give up and move on. Arguing will just make them try harder.

Note that this post applies to any/all political or religious ideologies. Attacking one entity or the other is against the rules.

  • Trump demands 25% tariff on any iPhone not made in the US

Extortion?  Backtracking?  Did no one learn anything from January 6?

Remember Richard Nixon's comment to David Frost:  If the President does it, it's not illegal.

Nixon's party of law and order, fiscal responsibility and small government has been completely co-opted by a conman.  Voters have put this party in charge of the Executive and Legislative branches, and the fact that most members of the judiciary hew toward this party's views means the President can do whatever he wants.
Indeed. The question my friends and I in the UK ask, is at what point is the US technically a dictatorship?
Oh, we crossed the literal definition around January 20th with the signing of dozens of executive orders. Now whether anyone wants to admit it is a whole different discussion.

    From Britannica:
dictatorship, form of government in which one person or a small group possesses absolute power without effective constitutional limitations. The term dictatorship comes from the Latin title dictator, which in the Roman Republic designated a temporary magistrate who was granted extraordinary powers in order to deal with state crises. Modern dictators, however, resemble ancient tyrants rather than ancient dictators. Ancient philosophers’ descriptions of the tyrannies of Greece and Sicily go far toward characterizing modern dictatorships. Dictators usually resort to force or fraud to gain despotic political power, which they maintain through the use of intimidation, terror, and the suppression of basic civil liberties. They may also employ techniques of mass propaganda in order to sustain their public support.

  • OpenAI's $6.5B bet on Jony Ive could redefine how people interact with technology

After reading John Gruber´s articles "something is rotten at Apple" and John Siracusa´s article "Apple Turnover", I have to say that something is really rotten at Apple.

Apple is behind in AI (LLM, Siri, their GPU capacity, human resources for AI etc.).
Apple is behind in their HW. Apple is launching foldables.... when??

Apple has been rotten with their timid updates for iPhones. Camera gets better and better, but not much.

    iPhone 17´s design is rotten.

    I mean.... What isn´t rotten?

I do not expect too much from io or OpenAI, but I hope they prove me wrong.

At the end, it is due that we really need "cool" devices nobody is thinkg about yet.

    Rotten Apple.
I'm interested in what Apple does with AI at WWDC. "Behind," sure, if you're expecting Apple to be Google or OpenAI. Apple is leading in personal, private, and on-device AI, but that's boring and people want flashy headlines. I wouldn't bet against Apple yet anyway.

Foldables? Yeah, it's in the works but they're expensive and target a very niche market. Still looks like a nerd-driven fad that would have been cool a decade ago, but XR has solved the problem foldables were meant to tackle -- more screen, less space.

    iPhone 17 hasn't released yet.

And every "AI first" piece of hardware that has released so far has been an abject failure. Ive is a legendary designer, but design can't make up for lack of interest or use case.

For both OpenAI and Apple, it's best if we wait and see what happens.

  • Trump has a problem with Tim Cook, because Foxconn is building factories in India

Ok guys, the usual offenders are derailing the forum comments. Please refrain from generalities and unspecific worship without hard numbers. That goes for both sides. No need for insults, slights, or ad hominems of any kind.

And no, just stating that you believe something (an opinion) isn't a fact. Sharing that things are better/worse without citing numbers, resources might as well be making stuff up. No, I don't mean you have to link to sources, but a well educated person should be able to see your comment and verify the data.

It's the difference between "Trump tariffs ruined us before and they are ruining us again" versus "Tariffs caused sod prices to skyrocket resulting in billions in government bailouts to farmers in 2019, and the overall economy has dropped for the first time in years thanks to tariffs in 2025"

One is more of a feeling, accurate or not, the other is facts and figures that can easily be searched and have a tangible value and result. If you're going to go back and forth, stick to provable facts or don't bother chatting. All you're doing is stirring up people and making forum threads turn into a mess.

idk what's happened this past week, but you all were doing so well with this and have taken a big step back. Let's keep up the good work and keep forums civil and informative.

Edit: I actually deleted a post that was reasonable, (sorry Stabitha). I'm leaving the original two comments in the thread because they didn't break any forum rules and stated their opinions. It was the discourse that followed that got out of hand. Feel free to reply again to these posts cordially and with facts while avoiding any direct attacks. These get us nowhere. I hope I don't need to revisit this thread.
I got no issues with my comment(s) being deleted. I appreciate that y'all want to maintain a level of decorum while allowing people to express themselves in different ways. It is why I will participate in the forums here and not on a certain site whose name rhymes with MacRumors.

I will offer a small quibble. Gaslighting by posing something as an opinion is a pretty common approach on the internet machine. Gaslighting by definition is being dishonest. I feel like both comments fall fully under gaslighting. Just my 2c. Anyway, your comment section is your rules. Happy to do my best to follow them. Cheers!
I'm not sure they believe they're being dishonest. As forum moderators, we don't get to decide what we believe forum goers are thinking or their motive behind a post. We can only take it at face value. While some might disagree with the content, it didn't violate any rules against hateful speech. You're allowed to post incorrect information and be wrong in our forums. Now, if other forum members want to point out inaccuracies, go for it, as long as it all remains civil.

Besides, I believe we've got a pretty smart bunch in our forums and likely have a strong BS detector. While some posts that remain up are unfortunate and likely contain terrible inaccuracies, I don't believe anyone that's actually informed will "fall for it." And while some will respond and point out those inaccuracies, others will rely on the like/dislike feature, which seems to be doing a good job at giving forum goers a decent idea of what the majority of our members believe.
