  • Apple Maps renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America after official database update

I understand you deleting my original comment, that’s cool.

I do think Apple should have stood up though. As the old saying goes “Evil triumphs when good men do nothing”. To just go along is to assure that next time the President will be emboldened.
It's certainly a tough spot to be in. I do not envy Tim Cook right now.

Apple is run by cowards. No matter what the --- in Chief says it IS the Gulf of Mexico. That is established by international treaty and standards.
The US military will still call it Gulf of Mexico too. It's all just wishcasting and symbolism on the guy's part. A way of saying "look at how much power I have." A useless distraction that'll be undone.

I think Apple really had no choice here. It's one thing to say no to Russia, but the current administration will just enact vengeful regulations, fines, or tariffs until Apple does what they want. Apple is stuck between a rock and a hard place here. The best thing they can do as a company is appease the administration by changing text on a map and avoiding unneeded confrontation. The current administration's time in power is limited, so they only need to deal with it for a short term.

(Deleted original comment based on the political guidelines. Comment on the story and how you feel about it. The actions of the President speak for themselves and don't need our qualifiers for people to understand how we feel about it)

  • UK secretly orders Apple to let it spy on iPhone users worldwide

Apple could also just pull out of the UK entirely, fire all their UK employees, and stop buying UK goods and services.  I know they won't, but feck all fascist governments.
By that logic, they need to pull out of the USA immediately.
Because Apple is in the US that means they should prop up fascism and a police state?
Not directed at you personally, but people need to learn what fascism is. Fascism is a type of authoritarianism but not authoritarianism is fascism.

Fascism is a far-right system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

The U.K. is capitalist, and we can certainly argue that this would be a stringent movement control the rest of the definition doesn't fit at all. There U.K. isn't governed by the far-right, it isn't a dictatorship, there isn't violent suppression of opposition and the list goes on. So, yeah, not fascism at all
your quickly-googled Wikipedia version of what fascism is is wrong. It’s obviously written by a leftist and is nowhere near the actual definition. See merriam Webster.

A company that has consistently for decades pushed itself to build the best products and services ices in the world, who’s even altered course when it became apparent that things weren’t quite fair (see Taylor swift royalty letter), who’s taken its footprint seriously and fought like no other to be environmentally responsible, human rights centered, and stayed at the top in spite of heavy competition from the worlds big guns, interference from not only world governments, but even its own, and come out in top, while maintaining integrity and legality along the way, when the goalposts move, it’s time to recognize it’s the hand that moved the goalpost is at fault. Not the kicker who placed the ball perfectly. I’m rooting for apple.
Sorry, again, deleting the original comment because you've gone out of your way to incite anger via false claims. But the rest was good and can be seen in the quoted post. And for everyone's consideration, I've pasted the Merriam Webster definition of fascism at the bottom. While there can be a left or right extreme that rules with a fascist government, they have historically been right extreme, which is why there is an association.

I find that it's important to read this definition, then read it again, and think about who it fits.

often Fascism  a populist political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual, that is associated with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, and that is characterized by severe economic and social regimentation and by forcible suppression of opposition

A leader that places his rule above law, avoiding all government oversight, regimenting severe economic control over its citizens, and heavily regulating social standards via their rule of law? Seeking to punish all that oppose their world view? Sounds familiar actually. Saw a lot of this on the news today.

Note my edit of the quoted post. That would be allowed here. The parts I trimmed out, no, not so much. They presented debunked conspiracies as fact. We're not going to house such things here.

  • China threatens App Store probe in retaliation for trade tensions

    China showing its true colors.

After cook invested insane amounts of money in the country snd looking to do more, they turn around and pull this - just to get back at someone else.

    Shameful.

If China did things properly there wouldn’t be anything to worry about. Finally someone steps in and charts a course-correction.

China can be upset, because they didn’t get their way. But if they want to escalate, they’ll find the gravy train no longer delivers to that area.
I'm certain the US needs China more than China needs the US. They have the upper hand in any and all negotiations here.

There is an old proverb, 'we live in interesting times'. I would suggest that now it needs to be updated to say 'we live in insane times'.

In 1933 sociopathic criminals took over the Reich Chancellery and ended up murdering millions of people and ultimately causing the death of 12 Million Germans and a destruction of a great many German cities.

Now we have a similar sort of situation whereby the plans of the current US administration is going to unleash God only knows what on the world. Just consider some of the recent moves: Patel (a certifiable lunatic) taking over the FBI; RFK (a dangerous conspiracy theorist) taking over the Department of Health; Musk moving chess pieces around the government like its a board game.

Now the tariffs are going to ruin Apple's most profitable market outside the US.

I don't see how we don't end up with mass chaos and WWIII.
I am from India and I don't have much knowledge on US politics. But one point to make as an outsider - In the last 10 years, under which party's rule in US did the major conflicts in the world occur? There were no major wars in the world during Trump's first presidency. And two major conflicts (Russia Vs Ukraine, major escalation of Gaza conflict) occurred while Joe Biden was president. For the outside world, it does look like Democrats are the ones creating major conflicts in the world, in order to maintain US supremacy in the world order. Trump's presidency was not so bad for world peace, indeed it was damn good when compared to Biden's term. Not sure how Trump's second term would turn out to be in terms of peace in the world, but hoping that it would be similar to his first term. If that happened, then world is better off with Trump as POTUS.
We didn't leave the middle east until after Biden took over, so we had soldiers overseas in a foreign conflict the entire time Trump was president the first time. Biden didn't cause Russia to invade Ukraine, in fact it was Trump destabilizing the west with actions that led to his first impeachment that led Putin to being bold enough to invade Ukraine.

The problem with Israel and Gaza is that it was always a matter of when, not if. That situation has nothing to do with who is in charge of the United States, but with Trump back in charge and calling to send US troops to "level the place" and "relocate all of the Palestinians" to Egypt and Jordan so the US can build "the Riviera of the Middle East."

The tension between Taiwan and China are another example of a ticking time bomb that won't really rely on who is president of the US for it to go off.

Death and destruction follow Trump's every move. He's also threatened to use US officials to invade Mexico to take down cartels he's designated as terrorists. He's also talked about military force being used to take over Greenland and the Panama Canal.

This term is going to be about anything but peace. He's already gone down in history as the worst president in the history of the United States by almost every metric in his first term, and it seems he may just one up that in the second term.

The world is already worse off with Trump as president, and it hasn't even been a month.
