  • MacBook Air with M1 chip outperforms 16-inch MacBook Pro in benchmark testing

I frequently run compute intensive workloads, each one different, and often written in a high level language like Python for expediency as these are typically write once, run once apps, many running overnight or over a couple of days.

I run these on multi-core cloud instances and sometimes on my MBP (1.5 year old).

Recently I started running these on my iPad Pro and to my surprise the exact same code on the iPad Pro runs about 1.3 times faster. The battery drain goes up somewhat (partly because Pythonista prevents the display from sleeping) but the iPad remains cool to the touch.

I for one am looking forward to these ARM-based Macs. Now if someone would write about how effective the new Rosetta is...

  • Apple Silicon M1 Macs do not support eGPUs

If Apple thinks they can wring out huge performance gains in the GPU department they may go their own Si route.

Whatever they do, they need to avoid going into the “not invented here” tunnel vision mode.

More important for most is how compatible and fast this new Rosetta is. That’s probably the big question that’s on the mind of all early adopters.

  • Airbnb hires Jony Ive to design next-gen products and services

Steve was good at picking people for the job that he defined. Not perfect, but very good. His track record speaks for itself.

In the end the job was defined by him. If he knew you could deliver he would push relentlessly for perfection.

He picked Tim to be COO, not CEO. Those are very different roles.  Tim has grown into his role as CEO but I doubt that Steve groomed him for it.

Many others have left Apple and not shone as brightly as they did before. But some have.

I’m honestly surprised that a seeming iconoclast like Jony would take this role at this company. Let’s see what happens.

  • Porsche Taycan car gains podcasts and Apple Music time-synced lyrics

As well as removing the need for CarPlay, Porsche is providing three years of Apple Music as part of the car's purchase price.”

Excuse moi. CarPlay does a lot more. How does a music player replace it?

It would be a deal breaker for me.

“Yes I like the exhaust note, I’ll take it with CarPlay.”

  • Facebook CFO says personalized advertising 'under assault' by Apple privacy changes

When people vote off these platforms en masse, FB will see this assault turn into battery. Sooner than later, I hope.

I support Apple’s moves to educate users and force these companies to be transparent. Sadly, it’s the lawmakers who most need to be educated.
