  • New AirPods, AirPods Pro firmware updates are now available

It’s my understanding that firmware and software updates, are not the same thing. Firmware does not add new features, generally it improves the performance of hardware.

Software needs firmware (the interface that controls the hardware) to run - firmware does not necessarily need any software. All the firmware I wrote over the years needed no extra software to run - it was one and the same. This may also involve turning on or off certain hardware options that are “baked into” the hardware at manufacture.

  • It's time to drop apps that don't support Apple Silicon natively

One scenario William did not think of - from one developer I contacted

The release notes say “ Aug 20, 2021 Native support for M1 processor.” but it’s actually still INTEL.

The excuses were at least entertaining - along the lines of “Apple’s Xcode misled the developers” and the more usual “you won’t notice any difference” plus many more.

There isn’t always a alternative! We use Broadcast cameras from Sony. These cameras use SXS Cards as memory card. Sony doesn’t support with their device driver Apple Silicon. It’s impossible to ingest content to M1 Macs 🤨
Can you not just use a SXS card reader?

I can see that SJ's and JI's legacy is being compromised by such popularist sentiments and perhaps why JI was ejected.
Was JI ejected or were his form-over-function designs rejected and he quit?

Everyone has their time and place - no matter how good you are there will always be a time when you should move on (death, resign or fired) Your achievements should not be devalued (or worshiped) but often are.

Apple says this supports up to 96kHz, and means users "can enjoy high-fidelity, full-resolution audio."

    —except ’s own Hi-Res Lossless in 192 kHz 👀🤭
Soooo???? You're saying they therefore shouldn't have improved it all then?

Probably that you can't call something 'full resolution' if you yourself deliver a much higher resolution.
The average human can detect sound in the 20Hz to 20 kHZ.  96kHz is way outside the range of human hearing.
96kHz is not upper frequency response - it is the encoding bite rate - higher = better resolution but 192kHz is more than necessary to do the job but that's audiophiles for you
