Compared: Apple's second-generation Siri Remote versus predecessors
The second generation Siri looks like a huge improvement. I can second how frustrating the trackpad was, including how oversensitive it was especially when handling the remote by its edges. The mute button is also a no-brainer, but I can't say I will spring for the new version. I finally broke down and got a $12 GE universal remote so I can use my AppleTV and my TV itself on the same remote. What a concept. While it is somewhat less elegant and not perfect, it's vastly more convenient. The only thing I miss is using voice commands for searches on various apps, but the original Siri remote can be kept nearby for that.
Sometimes, in its quest for minimalist design, Apple has a tendency to sweep away useful functions you actually want and need. I think that's the story of the remote. With all of their thoughtful design, there's nobody who asks the simple question, "What do people need to do with this thing?"
