Epic Games shifts EU app store strategy after missing target by 71 million users
meterestnz said:I find it interesting that Epic states that it is a USA Company and seems to forget that it is owned by the Chinese. Or have I got that wrong? Apart from that issue he’s distorted so much information that I could never bring myself to trust any store associated with him. -
Apple won't return TikTok to the App Store until it's sold to a U.S. buyer
apple4thewin said:Let’s not forget that TikTok servers shut down and hours later servers reopened praising Trump for (no apparent reason) protecting them even though he has no authority until the 20th and he didn’t actually do anything until he signed the order today the 21st. -
Apple ending iCloud backup support for iOS 8 and earlier on December 18
DAalseth said:What is the cut off for devices that won’t run iOS9?
EDIT: I dug around and it appears that the iPhone 4 is the last one that won’t go to iOS9*. It appears that the 4S will. Anyone still running an iPhone 4 would be lucky if it worked with anything. We’re talking well over a decade ago. I keep my stuff longer than most, (running an 11 right now) but a 4 would be crazy.
*Feel free to let me know if this isn’t the case.

Apple execs address Mac mini's hidden power button in 2024 redesign
DAalseth said:hmlongco said:DAalseth said:Apple's 2024 Mac mini stashes the power button underneath, a bold stupid move that executives say aligns with user habits
They are trying to put a shine on a turd. This was a stupid design choice that goes against best practices and will waste electricity. So much for Apple trying to act like they keep the environment in focus.access the button by tucking a finger underneath to press it as long as you’re a six year old child. Otherwise you have to pick the unit up.
As far as photos, patches, etc, you forgot malware, DDOS attacks, not to mention damage from power ripples in the night.
No you ALWAYS shut your machine off when not using it.On the power usage side, the amount of power used when the system is asleep is fairly low, and it still consumes power even when you shut it down.As far as malware and DDoS go, those are both issues when the system is on and actively being used. And if someone has compromised your system for use in a DDoS attack or anything else, then they likely are sophisticated enough to use pmset to ensure the system is on when they need access to it. Once a system is compromised, you are hosed.Power surges happen day and night, and there is hardware that protects against them. Either a user protects against them or they don't.So, if you are serious about people saving power, ensuring their computer isn't used for malicious activity when not actively being used, and power surges, you would not just suggest that people always shut down their computer when not using it. You would tell them to shut it down and unplug it. And the cool thing about that is you can use pmset to boot your Mac as soon as it is plugged in. So where the power button is located isn't particularly relevant. -
First M4 Max benchmark tears apart the M2 Ultra Mac Studio
CheeseFreeze said:9secondkox2 said:CheeseFreeze said:Question:
Why is a 1tb, 48gb M4 Pro Mac Mini more expensive than the baseline price of a current Mac Studio M3 Max (assuming Apple will keep the price the same for M4 Max)?
Because just the difference in RAM but a much more specced enclosure and better chip doesn’t make sense to me.And that m4 pro Mac mini will tear the m2 max a new one. Heck, it whoops the m2 ultra also - at least in cpu. Waiting on GPU scores.
But my question remains - why is the M4 Pro purchase price as mentioned more expensive as what will be the base Mac Studio?
It is kind of reasonable to think that you can throw whatever upgrades at the min and not have it eventually pass the price of the base model Studio. Likewise I can throw upgrades into the Mac Studio and have it cost more than the base level Mac Pro.
