A better solution is to move your Home directory to the external drive.I have been doing this since OS X 10.1.Once the directory has been moved, change your home folder location in your account profile.Also, ensure you have a second admin account as things can go wrong.A huge benefit of this is that you can make clean installs of the OS by erasing the internal drive and doing a clean installation.Time Machine functions perfectly in this environment.

If this pans out, I will bow down and kiss the ground.I have a 4K monitor (unlike Apple's "solution" for small font sizes—change your 4K monitor resolution into a 3K resolution), I run at full resolution, and the lack of system-wide font control makes for an execrable user experience.Practically every email message must be zoomed to be able to be read.Various apps have almost unreadable controls.And, the piece de resistance is Console—completely unreadable.They've stonewalled us on this for years.
