  • Apple will allow users to opt in to ChatGPT services in iOS 18 after deal with OpenAI

Opt-in would make sense since agreeing to it will likely mean giving up some privacy to ChatGPT servers in the cloud.

If I had guts, I'd short AAPL stock - it's been rising for the past few months simply on analysts' expectation that Apple will make big announcements regarding AI.  I.e. letting the world know that it isn't behind in AI, after all.  But if, instead, we find out that they are indeed hopelessly behind - by essentially offering us another company's AI on their devices - the stock will go down, for sure.

And this sounds about right - Apple hasn't managed to improve Siri in 10+ years.  There's no reason to believe Apple could inject a massive improvement into it in the 1-2 years that AI has become a hot topic.

  • Apple plans a thinner and more expensive iPhone 17 for 2025

Thinner is obviously better than thicker, all other things being equal.  But will it be enough to encourage more iPhone sales, overall?  I doubt it.  It'll shift some people from buying an iPhone Pro Max to buying this.

What I'd like to see is an Apple spin on the folding phones  we've been seeing over the past couple years.  I imagine Apple hasn't done it so far because literally folding a single display just involves too many compromises in terms of longevity, quality, etc.  I certainly would not buy a phone that has a ridge and/or distortion in the middle of the screen.  But I would buy a smartphone with two displays where the hinge is made so clever that there's hardly any separation between the two screens.  More importantly, a phone that acts just like a current iPhone when it's still folded.  A phone that, when folded, is still not much thicker than a current iPhone.  I'd be willing to pay double what a current iPhone costs, because it'll give me the flexibility of using my phone like an iPad without an extra device.

The current iPad Pros are, what, 5mm thick?  So I think a 9-10mm folding iPhone is definitely doable - and only a couple mm thicker than current iPhones.

  • How fast will A18 in iPhone 16 be? The iPad Pro's M4 can tell us.

The author writes "If Apple is going to make AI-forward changes, the focus will be on the Neural Engine." But given that the A17 already matches the M4 with 38t ops/sec, why would much work be needed there?  It seems to me that the most AI-forward change Apple can make on the A18 is to provide more memory and increase memory bandwidth as everybody knows that the more RAM available, the larger/better an AI model can be built/used.

  • ByteDance would rather shut down US TikTok than sell it

Hmmmm, if a company would rather shut something down than sell it, that means there isn't any financial reason that TikTok exists today. A for-profit company would take the cash rather than lose everything. I wonder what value TikTok has to ByteDance and the Chinese government then? All that data on American citizens and a strong propaganda tool maybe?

Don't worry, once TikTok is gone, there will be plenty of US-grown alternatives that will thrive and take its place.
That's not the reason.  TikTok was created with intellectual property from the rest of BytDance at its core - i.e. proprietary algorithms.  To sell TikTok - which only makes 25% of BytDance's revenue - would mean giving away the IP that makes the rest of  ByteDance successful.  And the US only represents a small part of TikTok's global user base, so it's pretty clear that closing down shop in the US is financially preferable to giving away the goods of the whole company.

I guess American companies are not capable of creating a competitive platform offering the same features? Don’t wait for this brain dead time-waster to be forced out, get its domestic replacement out there now, then shame, induce, or appeal to the “patriotism” of TTers to migrate over. Hell, Trump could single handedly move his sheeple over in days.
The problem isn't the development of a competitive platform, but the 'network effect' of having a large audience.  Does anyone remember Google Hangouts?  In purely technical respects, it was far superior to Facebook.  But it never took off because people won't move to it since their 'friends' are not on it.   Chicken/egg problem.  Facebook now faces much the same problem with Threads - the X/Twitter competitor.   While more successful than Google's Hangout - probably because it leveraged its Snapchat and FB audiences - it still hasn't taken out X/Twitter.
