Why Tesla can get by without CarPlay but other car makers can't
apple4thewin said:To be honest not many people (at least the people i know) use any form of carplay. Only recent cars have came around to it and it will probably take another 5 years for it to go mainstream when people finally upgrade their cars -
Why Tesla can get by without CarPlay but other car makers can't
I think the main reason Tesla has so far gotten away with not supporting CarPlay is that it had first mover advantage in the EV space and could sell its EVs whether they had CarPlay or not. It's not like people who wanted a good EV had a choice. I predict that as more capable EVs with CarPlay come on the market, Tesla will eventually be forced to support it as well. Sure, Tesla has a bunch of its own Infotainment content that other car manufacturers don't, but it's not about the number of options, but the familiarity! Most people I know want the familiarity of (and access to their data on) the iPhone. They don't want to leave to learn yet another - sometimes not very user friendly - platform. With respect to their data, they trust Apple to protect it, whereas they may not trust car manufacturers not to monetize it.
I guess we will see how this plays out. I completely agree that GM has lost their marbles deciding to not include it in future EVs. No wonder Ford's CEO laughed when he heard the news. -
Apple's long-rumored all-glass tactile keyboard may be real sooner rather than later
You won't see this show up in any imminent iPhone for sure. For one, you won't see Gorilla glass - the super tough glass used on the iPhone - deforming in the ways described here. But I could see it on surfaces that aren't subject to as much accidental violence as the iPhone screen - maybe an all-glass MacBook or an all-solid Magic Keyboard or Mouse. -
Apple rumored to pick and choose which markets will get sideloading in iOS 17
If side loading becomes a reality, I hope Apple insists on putting up a clear warning dialog whenever a user tries to side load an application. The EU doesn't seem to give a sh1t about the safety/security of naive users who, until this becomes available, relied on Apple to keep them secure from malicious apps. I can already see the Safari popups inviting users to download a cool free app from lord-knows-where. A warning that they're about to install an application from a potentially dangerous source should be done for sure. It would be even nicer if Apple required all apps - side loaded or not - to go through the Apple review process or at least be signed with a valid certificate so there's at least traceability.

Humane startup finally demos a Star Trek communicator with projector
I guess we won't fully know whether this really is a "special moment in tech and AI" until we see a full demo, but the snippet shown doesn't seem all that special - I mean other than the feat of miniaturization. And I can't, for the life of me, see why someone would want to read a notification from their hand vs., say, a smartwatch. The latter would be much more readable and just as little work, if not less so, than trying to position your hand into the spot the laser projector is pointing to. Again, this is just a little video with no sound - maybe the final product will project a holographic assistant with whom you can have a conversation? That, I'd agree would qualify as the "special moment in tech and AI" being bandied about.
