  • Update your iPhone now to stop your iCloud data from getting stolen

It's not clear to me from the article whether any app can do this without *ever* getting any kind of permission first.  The article only says that it can grab the data "without you even knowing" - that could be sometime after an initial set of permissions was given by the user.

  • Analysis: Apple Vision Pro sells well, but needs more content faster

When I read this sentence: “ For context, that Wall Street estimate matches almost exactly the money Apple made from the iPhone in 2008” I was convinced that a lot more iPhones sold the first year than Vision Pro - and, sure enough, google it and the result points to nearly 2 million iPhone sales the first year.  But then I read the above more carefully, and it actually talks about MONEY made on AVP vs iPhone.  While maybe true, I find this highly deceptive: for one, the author never gives figures on MONEY - only on units sold.  For another, the success of a product isn’t - at least initially - about money made, but about adoption/growth!  With 2 million sold in the first year and a unit growth curve that’s admirable, third party developers had ample reason to develop apps for it.  With 500,000 sales for AVP the same cannot be said.

  • Apple's iPhone 17 Slim is a wrongheaded approach that ignores what people really want

Must be a slow news day when a lengthy article complains about Apple's "wrong-headedness" on the scantiest of rumors regarding the iPhone 17 "Slim".  First of all, we don't know how much slimmer - some rumors, since that's what you're basing your entire article on - state that it'll barely be a millimeter thinner.  We also don't know what "smaller display" means - it could be that it's merely smaller than the Max - but still larger than the Pro.  Lastly, the fact that there are always people complaining about battery life doesn't mean much because it's just a vocal minority on tech forums that always squeals..  I bet the vast majority of iPhone users are perfectly fine with battery life.  I have the 16 Max and just came back from a flight to Asia and another one to Spain.  Never had a problem with battery life.  But, then, like most folks, I just watch movies and browse the web while on the planes.  But still - lasted fine.

To answer your question: I'd love a 17 Slim if it slotted between the Pro and the Max.

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro M4 Max review: The pinnacle of the portable Mac

I see a lot of information about CPU/GPU performance.  I wonder if anyone has any performance information on the built-in SSD?  I have a very disk-intensive workflow and use a 2021 MBP (iw. Max 1, 32gb RAM) - will the 2024 MBP's SSD perform substantially better?  If so - that and the matte display will be my excuse for getting the new model.

  • There will never be an Apple Ring, says rival with crossed fingers

I think the only question that needs asking is "Does a ring bring anything extra to the table [from the Apple Watch]  to warrant 'one more device to charge'?"   I already saw a comment about  a ring being more comfortable to wear overnight - but I don't think that's sufficient reason for enough people to warrant a new product.  So what feature can a ring bring to the table that might?  The only thing I can think of is gesture control.  With one (or more) rings on one's hand(s), AR and VR object manipulation would become a whole lot easier to implement.  I know the AVP is already doing this with sensors in the headset - but that's probably also one of the reasons the thing is such a clunker and not the mass market success Apple probably wants it to be.  With light-weight AR glasses, a ring providing hand position information could be very useful.

I'm an Apple fan - I don't think I would buy a ring unless it offered new functionality my Ultra lacks (and, btw, neither my wife nor I have any trouble sleeping with it).  Since AR glasses are still years away, I suspect so will an Apple Ring.
