  • There will never be an Apple Ring, says rival with crossed fingers

I think the only question that needs asking is "Does a ring bring anything extra to the table [from the Apple Watch]  to warrant 'one more device to charge'?"   I already saw a comment about  a ring being more comfortable to wear overnight - but I don't think that's sufficient reason for enough people to warrant a new product.  So what feature can a ring bring to the table that might?  The only thing I can think of is gesture control.  With one (or more) rings on one's hand(s), AR and VR object manipulation would become a whole lot easier to implement.  I know the AVP is already doing this with sensors in the headset - but that's probably also one of the reasons the thing is such a clunker and not the mass market success Apple probably wants it to be.  With light-weight AR glasses, a ring providing hand position information could be very useful.

I'm an Apple fan - I don't think I would buy a ring unless it offered new functionality my Ultra lacks (and, btw, neither my wife nor I have any trouble sleeping with it).  Since AR glasses are still years away, I suspect so will an Apple Ring.

  • Developers can begin work on an app intent system that will make Siri smarter in 2025

I was one of those disappointed by Siri's limited improvements - and I'm on 18.2 beta :-(

Before and after AI, Siri is just as dumb as it's always been:

[IEntry condition: my library has 7 albums by the group "James", one of which is "James: The Best Of". Talking to Siri via CarPlay]

Me: Siri, play all James shuffled.
Siri: Playing "Best of James shuffled"
Me: Siri, play all James Albums, shuffled.
Siri: Playing "Best of James shuffled"
Me:  Play all the albums of the group James
Siri: Playing  "Best of James shuffled.
    Me...ARRRRRGGGG MF*&##@

The only improvement I have seen since the introduction of Apple "Intelligence" is that Siri is now a bit more context aware - i.e. you can ask some follow-up questions and Siri will [sometimes] know what you are talking about.  E.g.: "What is the population of  France?"  - Siri answers  "What is its landmass?"  It gives the landmass of France.

  • New MacBook Pro arrives with M4 Pro, M4 Max, and a black colorway

Does anyone know if there are any big improvements to SSD speeds of late?  I have a 2021 MBP (32gb, Max chip) and my daily workflow revolves around compiling thousands of  files of code - a faster processor isn't  going to help me much, but a much faster SSD would definitely get me to upgrade.

Well....maybe the new matte display might too: I'm writing this, barely able to read my screen with all the reflection going on :-(

  • Apple Pay dominated the world in just ten years -- but it has more work to do

Apple Pay itself has always been a joy to use - but Apple Wallet is annoying to no end.  Once again today, I see a notification badge with a number in it on the wallet icon.  But the  app is so poorly written that, once you go into the Wallet, you have no idea which card caused the notification!   This poor user interface has been there forever :-(  And where is the global search?  I realize Wallet is for more than just credit cards, but come on! - why can't I do a keyword search across all cards?  E.g. if I recall buying a pair of jeans but can't remember which credit card I used, I have to manually go into each card and search individual transaction histories (usually by scrolling as none of the credit cards I have, other than Apple Card,  even has a search function!)

Other than that - I'm a happy camper with Apple Pay.

  • Apple is considering multiple paths for future Apple Vision Pro hardware

The “Holy Grail” option -  but with the iPhone doing all the heavy lifting - is the only one that would have mass appeal.  I have no idea why Tim Cook et al insist on doing everything in glasses (or even in the current VP headset) when there simply isn’t enough room for batteries to do all that computation onboard.  We all already have smartphones in our pockets - with AR glasses managed wirelessly from those phones, we could increasingly leave them there.  Such a product would not only allow for a gazillions of new use cases, but it would also help Apple sell yet more iPhones.
