  • Apple rumored to have a foldable display supplier selected soon

"...foldable MacBook Pro..." - now THAT is something I could get enthusiastic about (vs. a foldable iPhone.)  Since Covid, I've gotten so used to doing all my work from a comfy chair in the living room rather than connected to two external monitors in the office.  While virtual desktops are great, there are lots of times when I wished for bigger laptop display.   Apple used to have a 17" one - if the rumored 18" or 20" MBP was true, I'd be first in line.  Alternatively, if the laptop had a foldout second or even third display (and on a hinge rather than a bendy display) that could be unfolded on demand, that would be even better (if the displays were thin enough).

A foldable iPhone?  The only way I'd be interested in that is if (a) the folded phone was no thicker than the current iPhone 16 Pro Max (8.25mm), (b) the folded phone would be as usable as the current iPhone (for the 70+% of the time when you really don't need a big screen), and (c) the folding display lasts at least 4 years and doesn't have noticeable distortions at the fold).

  • Two Apple Silicon chip flaws could expose your private data to thieves

"...and disable JavaScript when not needed. Browser extensions that block scripts can also help." - anybody else find this advice useless?  Seems to me that you wouldn't be able to use a high level , interpreted language like Javascript to exploit a  machine instruction level  bug.

  • Development of Apple's smart glasses continues despite massive hurdles

"That said, tethering to an iPhone or another device could help further, by handling processing for the glasses. This offloads another set of components and reduces the power draw, but it still means it'll be connected to another piece of kit." - these two sentences, buried in the midst of the article really solves all the problems, doesn't it.  And Google did this some 10+ years ago with Google Glass, so with 10+ years of miniaturization later, Apple should be able to produce something much better (and Google Glass was already pretty good at the time!).

I suspect lack of vision at Apple is to blame - by not having a strong and visionary leader, some committee probably decided that a standalone VR device was the answer.  First a helmet (the Vision Pro) would eventually be miniaturized into glasses.  But given how much CPU power and ancillary devices (e.g. extremely high-res screens) are needed, it's never going to result in regular glasses people would want to wear.

And why is "connected to another piece of kit" such a big deal anyway?  The Apple Watch isn't standalone and became a great success.  The iPhone with ARKit already has the capability to display AR - so all that would need to be done is put the same images it currently displays on the phone's screen onto a screen in the glasses and what the phone camera currently sees and gets processed for AR would be delivered by cameras in the glasses.  If the glasses only deliver sensor data to the phone and displays images coming from the phone, battery capacity is much less of an issue.  The only missing piece of the puzzle is user interaction when there's no touch screen (phone is in pocket).

  • Apple Intelligence & Siri team getting a boost from fixer Kim Vorrath

I don't know what can save Siri - not sure a project manager is enough.  As an article by John Gruber just yesterday related, Siri is dumb and apparently getting dumber by the day: https://daringfireball.net/2025/01/siri_is_super_dumb_and_getting_dumber
.While I've never asked Siri sports questions, I can attest to its stupidity.  Even seemingly simple requests such as "Play all songs by James [a band in my library]" get incorrect responses (in this case, Siri insists on playing songs from one particular album only).

Siri is now, what, 14 years old?  There hasn't been an excuse for this level of ineptitude in years.  At this point, my money is that Siri won't get much better any time soon - even with AI help.  Yet AAPL stock has a lot riding on Siri getting better  - it's literally the only candidate for a "killer app" when it comes to AI on iPhone.  All the other AI features that have been introduced so far run from pure gimmick (e.g. genmoji) to niche (e.g. object deletion in Photo) to useful-but-not-must-have (e.g. improved searching within Photos).  Only a vastly improved Siri - one that finally delivers on the 14 year old promise of becoming a helpful personal assistant - would help Apple re-invigorate iPhone sales.

  • What matters most for AAPL shares next week

If you look back at the same time last year,  Erik Woodring forecast a significant upgrade cycle due to AI features in the upcoming iPhone 16.  I know, because I ridiculed him and other analysts over it at the time.  Of course the anticipated AI-driven "super upgrade cycle" didn't happen and now, a year later, we're still waiting for the more significant promised AI features to materialize....as far as I can tell, it doesn't look like there  won't be a "must have" AI feature  even by the time the iPhone 17 comes around.
