  • Florida has temporarily suspended support for its digital driver's license app

Sure this sounds super convenient but I'm not sure why everyone is rushing to have all of their data and identity controlled by Big Tech. I actually find it scary that one company has all your health data, personal information, banking information, and basically knows everything about you. That they'll use for their own corporate gain. There may not have been a data breach to date but the day there is, it'll be the most disastrous. I prefer my data to stay with the places that hold them now. With all that said I support regulation of big tech and think they should stay out of every industry

  • Apple green lights Epic Games Store in rapid reversal

Though I'm not a Fortnite fan, this is definitely a win for consumers, it was always crazy to me that Apple can literally victimize their customer base for their own greed. Like it or not, my opinion and what appears to be the growing opinion is phones are the new computers, all purpose devices and should not be limited by the manufacturer. You should be able to download apps from anywhere you want.
The vast majority of Apple customers disagree with you.  People choose Apple because they want it to “just work” know that everything is vetted by Apple.  If people wanted other app stores they’d buy an Android.
It's should be clear by now that the "vast majority of Apple customers" (really just code for AppleInsider patrons and a few other tech sites) are in the minority. I follow a few sites and really this site is the only site that believes Apple should just get away with anything.
I'm sure a lot of people don't care either way and once people find out that they can use their phones the way they want that opinion will continue to turn. There's always an option not to use this alt App Stores. I personally can't wait for Chromium based Chrome, and to be able to download the real NordVPN from their site like I could on Android

  • Rudimentary RCS support is in the iOS 18 beta -- with some big caveats

    mpantone said:
One thing I know is if handset manufacturers and carriers don't integrate RCS seamlessly, Joe Consumer is not going to adopt it. The average person doesn't pore over tech sites and wireless communications documentation trying to learn about this stuff. They pick up their phone, type some stuff and wait for the other person to respond.

Basically if Apple and Google don't come to agreement on common smartphone communications protocols and standards, it's not going to be embraced by the world.

Google can scream "RCS now!!!" until they are blue in the face but little will come to pass if Apple doesn't answer back.

From my vantage point, Apple is waffling at RCS adoption, maybe they are waiting for a better standard to emerge. There is no evidence that Apple is putting much effort into this feature deployment especially based on the timeline to an expected iOS 18 release.
While it's true that your average consumer doesn't pour over tech sites, social media (TikTok) will play a huge role in getting the word out to their demographic and it will grow from there. Messaging is very important to the youth and they'll be all over the improvements to that type of service

  • How iOS 18 lets you neatly rearrange app icons and home screen widgets

With this change I've noticed that the apps will go to the bottom of the screen but when you try to put a widget at the bottom there's a gap that prevents it from sitting at the same level an app would. This is beta 1 though so hopefully Apple fixes this
