  • Apple Invites has Sherlocked party organizing app Partiful

This is the first time I’ve seen “Sherlock” being used as a verb. Is this a new Gen Z or Gen Alpha terminology? Or is this an older term and I’m just late to the party? (See what I did there? Late to the party… because… invitation… *cough*.)

(Also: I don’t live in an English-speaking country anymore, so I’m generally behind on a lot of new English language related things, lol.)

Edit: Oh. I see. Did some quick research. Not a new term at all. Learn something new every day.

  • Nomad Universal Apple Watch cable review: This $100 cable simplifies your charging setup

That seems like quite a lot weight to be supported by a single USB-C port. Especially in that picture where the puck-end of the cable plugged into the laptop and then the Apple Watch is placed on top of the puck.

And for $100… that Nomad cable is still only USB 2.0 transfer speed?
I thought the photo was kinda silly and beside the point for this cable--the point being that one cable will handle both your watch-charging and USB-C cable needs, and NOT "Yay, I can charge my watch while I power my Macbook now." (Although you could, as the pic makes clear.) Also, GREAT point about the USB 2.0 transfer speed--If you're going to charge $100 for a cable, then at least spec it like a $100 cable, This low speed spec forces you to carry an extra USB-C cable if you're going to need higher transfer speeds, so you're back to needing an extra cable anyway.
Yeah. If this is for It’s all fine and dandy to have a charging cable with USB 2.0 transfer speeds. I have a few cables lying around that have no data transfer capability at all (which is actually a benefit in some use cases). But none of those were $100.

For $100, yeah, make it at least USB 3.0. Well… for $100 it should be at least 3.1. No, eff that. For $100 it should be Thunderbolt 3 (maybe even 4… I won’t push my luck for 5 though, lol).  Especially since it’s only 1.5 meter in length. For $100, can’t you make it an even 2 meters? lol

To Nomad’s credit, the company makes it clear that this is to simplify charging. Specifically to simplify your charging. But (as you say) if its’s 2.0 transfer speeds, you are back to needing to carry around an extra cable anyway if you want anything faster than 2.0 transfer speeds. So that simplicity is already out the window (for some people).

  • New macOS malware disguises itself as Chrome & Zoom installers

This particular threat is easy to avoid.

    1. No self-respecting Apple user should be using Google's spyware Chrome to do anything.

    2. If you need a Zoom client, get it from zoom.us (that's the official website). Nowhere else.
You say that (“easy to avoid”), but much of this threat involves social engineering. We’ve seen multibillion companies get hacked via social engineering. Heck, we’ve seen actual cybersecurity companies (whose whole purpose for existing is to stop hacks) get hacked via social engineering. If a cybersecurity professional can get tricked with some social engineering, then it can happen to any of us. Social engineering hacks NOT are easy to avoid. And it’s not going to get any easier to avoid in the future with the rise of deepfakes and the like.

But as an Apple aficionado, do remind yourself that Apple has a cohabitation with Google to the tune of $20 Billion. So that when you run an Apple search with an internet access you are going through Apple's/Google's Portal not some proprietary, indie thingamajig like DuckQuackDuack or Wolfram. Or worst yet, Bing :s Schming which is an ocean of garbage.
DuckDuckGo’s search results (which is what I assume you mean by “DuckQuackDuack”) are mostly based on Bing. The “ocean of garbage” (as you say) is what DuckDuckGo uses.

That seems like quite a lot weight to be supported by a single USB-C port. Especially in that picture where the puck-end of the cable is plugged into the laptop and then the Apple Watch is placed on top of the puck. And (seemingly) none of that weight is being supported by the desk. It’s all (seemingly) the USB-C port.

I (possibly) damaged an iPad Pro USB-C port a few months ago by having (maybe) too much weight being supported by a single port. Maybe. I don’t know that for sure. It could have been some other reason why the port got damaged. But ever since then I’ve been more mindful about things like that.

I mean… it’s probably not that big a deal if you are careful about it. But at a $100… that’s a lot of ask for. You can buy an authentic 1m Apple USB-C cable and an authentic 1m Apple Watch cable twice each (four charging cables total) at full MSRP for less than one Nomad cable. Full MSRP Apple Tax and that four cable example is still $4 cheaper, lol.

And for $100… that Nomad cable is still only USB 2.0 transfer speed? Granted, the Apple cable in my example is also USB 2.0. But the Apple cable — and this is important — isn’t $100, lol.
