  • MacBook Air update arrives with lower starting price & M4 performance boost

    I shouldn’t be surprised (and I’m not) but: +$200 to go from 16GB to 24GB. Sigh… lol

16GB is probably fine, but I wish the memory upgrades were a little more reasonable. $200 is 20% of the base model price.

But you do just three free months of Apple TV+ with the purchase of the MacBook Air, so that’s good. :D

Although I just redeemed three free months of Apple TV+ the other day with no purchase necessary, lol.

Incidentally, I never really gave Apple TV+ a good try before. But when I found out that Ronald D. Moore had a show on it (For All Mankind), I activated the trial and started watching. It’s an amazing show!

Apple TV+ has this great show created my absolute favorite sci-if TV writer… and it’s been on since 2019… and I had no idea.

But anyway… $200 for 8 extra GB and a free Apple TV+ trial with a purchase, lol.
Or you can go from 24 GiB to 16 GiB to save $200.

You need to look at the product category as a whole. Apple is offering the base model at less of a profit specifically to entice new and more buyers. There's a reason why Apple only sells the base model RAM configurations at stores instead of only having the maxed out RAM options available.

The bottom line is whether it works for your needs. I can find a much cheaper Windows notebook but that doesn't work for my personal needs regardless the amount of RAM installed.
Oh, I get it. I understand what you are saying. I’m just commenting about the memory pricing. No matter what though, +$200 for 8 extra GB is tough for me to justify knowing what memory prices actually are. It makes me feel like a stupid-idiot for even thinking about maybe considering the possibility of buying the Air with 24GB, lol.

Just to be clear, I’m not calling anyone else a stupid-idiot. Just me personally. I’m the stupid-idiot. That’s how I feel when I hover over the +$200 configuration box, lol.

(Actually +30,000 yen. I’m in Japan, but I’m typing the prices in USD since not too many in the comments section are from Japan.)

I’m honestly thinking about a Framework laptop. Something that I can literally replace any and every component in it. I do like what Framework (the company) is trying to do. That Framework 12 that the company introduced a week or so ago looks really interesting. “12” for 12 inches. I do prefer small laptops. Man I miss that MacBook Air 11”. What an amazing laptop that was (for its time).

I don’t think a price has been announced yet for the Framework 12, but I’ll be keeping my eyes out for it for its expected April preorder date. It’s annoying that Framework still doesn’t ship to Japan yet, but I can order one and pick it up that next time I’m Stateside.

  • Apple updates iPad Air with faster M3 processor

Seems fine. I know people get very angry about products announcements in the comments section, but, you know… seems fine. But I’m also a happy owner of the new iPad Mini and I’ve been actually told that I’m an idiot for buying it. (Not joking, lol.) So I get it. People are quite… passionate about product announcements, lol.

  • Apple's iPhone Fold is creeping closer - what the rumor mill says is coming

Beating a dead donkey this is what this is. Another iPhone (yawn): iPhone 16e (aka the Dud) and now the iPhone Fold (another dud). And in another four years: the iPhone Anniversary Edition - 20th Phone. What does it do? Makes phone call, text messages and oh yes the entire back is covered with cameras. Other than that, nada. Other than over-complicating an iOS with myriad functionality that everyone keeps turning off because it is getting in the way of working and eats up gobs of memory.

And, oh yes, let's not forget Apple Intelligence. Which Microsoft shuttered last week is starting to look a lot like the dot.com boom of the Y2K.

Talk about eating the same meal that Steve Jobs cooked all those years ago. Must be surely getting stale by now.

And the new vision: the Vision Pro aka the dead horse.

Apple needs new blood rather than stirring the same pot ad infinitum.
And meanwhile, in the real world: Apple's booming sales keep fueling record-setting revenues and profits, it's the world's most valuable company, its stock price sits near its all-time highs and it just won its 18th straight World's Most Admired Company award. But The Cult of Dead Steve just can't abide a level of consistent, record-setting success that exceeds what Apple achieved under Jobs.
World’s Most Admired Company Awards is… kind of a misnomer.

But yes, Apple has won that award 18 times in a row.
Does that make Apple the Beyoncé of the Most Admired Company Awards?
I don’t understand the reference (joke?). Beyoncé famously only just now won the Grammy for “Album of the Year” for the first time ever in her career (despite having been making amazing music for 25+ years). If anything, Beyoncé the exact opposite of Apple winning the Most Admired Company award for 18 years in a row.

  • iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: A new Apple Intelligence-powered entry-level option

I wonder how Apple will justify the price come Fall when the iPhone 17 lineup launches… Will they simply just discontinue the 16 since they will be adding a new Air model? I mean, $200 difference between the 16 and 16e is all well and good, but if it’s only $100 difference, then it will make it a harder sell for the 16e unfortunately. I understand the price increase, but I was hoping it would’ve been no more than $529.
No reason why Apple couldn’t just lower the price of the iPhone 16e as well this fall. I’m not saying Apple will do that, but Apple certainly could.
