  • Apple rumored to be in talks with Anthropic and OpenAI about powering new Siri

Crazy that the stock is up on this news, because it officially confirms that Apple ideas way behind.

Is it (as the article says) true, that ChatGPT or Anthropic will run on device, so that they don’t get API data from Apple?

Otherwise, it is no good news for Apple for long term.
This might be a case where the market already believed Apple is way behind and the stock is up because this indicates Apple might do something about it.

Apple can be successful using inputs from other firms. They sold a lot of Macs using Intel processors, for example. For an older example, the enabling technology for the original iPod was a 1.8" hard drive from Toshiba.

Historically, the key to Apple's success has been the successful designs of *products* that combine those various inputs in a compelling way.

To my way of thinking, this is the real concern with Apple right now. They are having product design difficulties. I wouldn't be concerned if they designed a compelling new Siri that relies on someone else's LLM. I am concerned that they haven't designed a compelling new Siri.
With Siri positioned on our devices and with access to our home's HomeKit devices, I am absolutely concerned about Siri using someone else's LLM because of privacy and security concerns.  I specifically chose HomeKit over Alexa and Google Home because of encryption and higher level of security,  I use Matter because it is my understanding is that they chose the HomeKit model as a starting point.  It is frustrating that Apple with billions of dollars in the bank is unable to focus on more than a couple of product development at a time.  We users have pointed out Siri's limitations and lack of attention for more than a decade now and were ignored.   Gee, I wonder how things would be if Apple had given just a little thought on how to develop Siri before now.  Apple is the dumbest, wealthiest company in the world.  Fire Tim Cook!

Apple Silicon M5 coming out in the fall or Siri being 20% smarter which would you choose and which one do you think the public would care more about right now? AI which is currently half hype, half fad and is unprofitable currently for everyone other than Nvidia, or Apple Silicon and the five operating/ecosystems being better than they were last year without AI is probably more important long-term than Siri being like Robbie the robot in Forbidden Planet.

Apples path is going to be longer because they are carrying the load of software and hardware in house that’s just the way it is and there is no shortcut.

Siri needs to be 200% smarter.  We don't need more processing power, just so things are 5% faster.  A more capable Siri enables all current Apple products to work better and opens up new opportunities like that unannounced home device.  IMO, Apple Intelligence is all hype right now because it is all useless.  Artificial Intelligence is useful because I love using Grok even though it gets things partially incorrect 1/3 of the time, but Apple isn't developing an "AI" per se; it is developing an assistant.

First point: no, this confirms nothing about Apple being "way behind"

Second: ChatGPT already runs via Siri without getting data from Apple or the user. Private Cloud Compute is server side, but independently verified to not be storing user data.

Third: How is giving users access to more private and secure models using Apple technology a bad thing for Apple?
First, the fact that Apple has to outsource Siri to a competing AI is the very definition of Apple being way behind.  Do you think this was Apple's first pick.

Second, the very fact that Apple is looking at ChatGPT vs. Anthropic shows that Apple's initial plan to have a device-based AI was completely misguided.  I have posted about this before.  It is illogical to focus on a device-based Siri when every other AI framework requires significant computing resources and are server based.  Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Apple's desire to emphasize privacy, but if Apple is behind on AI, you don't play catch up by creating additional obstacles for itself.  Develop ta server-based approach first and then work on a mini, device-based approach second.

Apple has completely screwed up Siri and HomeKit.   I swear that no one in Apple uses HomeKit.  Just this afternoon, I tried to use Siri to turn off a light in another room.  I was right next to HomePod mini, and it said, "I can't find that device in your home."  WTF!  It is 100% listed on my HomeKit home.  I was next closest to my MacBook Pro, so pressed the Siri icon and made the same request.  "I am having trouble connecting to the network."  WTF!  I am able to surf the internet, so it is indeed connected to the network.  So, the next closest was my iPhone, so I just opened up Home and turned off the light via the app.  So, indeed the device is in my Home, and before anyone comments, I am on th latest firmware/OS and am using the current HomeKit framework.  WTF, Apple!  This is how broken Apple has made Siri and HomeKit.  Embarrassing.  But, what is even more embarrassing is that NO ONE has lost his/her job for it.  I don't usually push for people to be fired, but people need to be held accountability at Apple.  So, Tim Cook should be terminated for his lack of leadership because a fundamental part of leadership is holding people accountable.

  • Apple's AI rollout leaves Siri behind & long-time fans are asking questions

    Apple knows Siri isn’t grrat.

They’re working on it. It’s not done.

It’s not a small thing to get Siri to where it needs to be.
Do you know what people thought of Grok-2? People thought it was junk and behind all other AI's. So, how long did it take X to evolve from Grok2 to Grok3, which is arguably one of the top AI's currently? Grok-2 was released in 08/24. Grok-3 was released in 02/25. Are you telling me that Apple with its vast resources is going to take 1.5+ years to advance Siri? (It was announced at 2024 WWDC, and it won't be released until "some time in 2026". Now, I know that the new Siri leadership took over in 04/25, so that is still 8+ months. But, it also means that the former Google executive idiot accomplished nothing.

I want to read the story that says Tim Cook dragged the Siri team into a room and tore into them for a decade of weak leadership and failure to push Siri forward or for failing to keep abreast of the fast changes happening with LLMs.  The normal approach of Apple taking years to perfect a concept will leave Apple in the dust if it continues the same old development strategy in this current environment. And don't get me started on the  Apple Car team. The one that burned through billions and delivered nothing. No product. No plan. Just hype.

If those two disasters don’t spell executive failure, what does?

I want to see executives who are a lot less rockstar and hair (I'm looking at you Craig) and a lot more "look at this amazing new product with crazy new capabilities.  I'm bored with the updated set of tinker toys now with a new glass effect.

I am glad to see WWDC contained next to no promises of features "coming soon". That lazy approach to engineering and marketing deserves to stay in the vaporware land that is Windows and Honeywell's residential building services group.

Tim Cook should be fired. If the Board won't fire him, then they should be fired too. TBH, I don't fault Apple for Apple Car because a company should attempt to innovate and fail. I would fire Tim Cook because he has completely failed in his job as CEO. Sure, he has contributed significantly to Apple; however, the job of the CEO is leadership. And, a major part of leadership is holding people accountable. Where are the firings? How many people has Tim Cook fired during his tenure? Zero. Siri has been ignored since it was announced despite consumers and Apple fans repeatedly encouraging Apple to develop it. When smart Siri was announced at 2024 WWDC and didn't materialize, what did Tim do? He reshuffled the leadership team. Please! That was a pussy move for such a high profile failure. Tim should have fired that former Google executive idiot. And, the fact that the smart Siri won't come out until "2026 sometime", more than an entire year after the new leadership took over, tells us that the former Google executive idiot accomplished nothing. He was an utter failure, and he is not being held accountable. Well, if he isn't going to be held accountable, then Tim Cook should be fired first and then that idiot. I am blazing furious with the situation because I upgraded my iPhone in anticipation of smart Siri. I feel that I was hoodwinked by Apple and was sold a bill of goods. I could have held onto my old phone and kept using it until smart Siri comes out because all of this Apple Intelligence crap is just that - crap. There is nothing that this new phone offer me that my old phone didn't.
